Mail Tribune 100: Aug. 4, 1916 The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Aug. 4, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Aug. 4, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Aug. 4, 1916 ELKS PREPARE FOR FISH BANQUET AT KELLY'S ISLAND Final preparations for the big fish feed to be held by the Elks Sunday afternoon on Kelly's Island on upper Rogue river, are now being made. Chris Gotten, who has been christened by the Elks as "Chief Chef and Champion Dishwasher," is in charge of culinary arrangements. A number of the best fishermen of the Rogue left Friday afternoon for the upper reaches of the Rogue and will spend the time until noon Sunday in enticing steelheads. Other members of the crowd of 200 who are expected to be on hand will leave Medford about noon Sunday. The time until 5 o'clock, when the feast begins, will be spent in sports. In addition to the official program of sports, including ball games, races, etc., an unofficial program as follows has been given out: Footrace, Frank Isaacs, representing the leans, and Court Halls, representing the fats. Cribbage game for the championship of Kelly's Island between Dr. Gowdy and Judge Kelly. Match race between Court Hall and Porter J. Neff, three times around the island. Tug of war, Clyde Hazelrigg and Ole Allenderfer vs. George T. Collins and "Quiz" Quisenberry. Swimming match, between Carl Heilbronner and Leon Haskins, race to last three times across the river unless contestants drown before the finish. What promises to be the most exciting event and which may lead to a fist encounter will be a debate between Dave Wood, representing the allies, and J. J. Buchter, the strong pro-German. All members are requested to bring first aid outfits and the stretcher and hospital corps are requested to be on hand with all equipment. LOCAL AND PERSONAL A party of S. P. officials arrived in Medford today and are being taken over the valley by A. S. Rosenbaum, S. P. agent. Those in the party are R. L. Ruby of San Francisco, Assistant Superintendent of Transportation; C. W. Martyn of Portland, Assistant Superintendent; Fred Hansen, train master at Roseburg; and M. R. Whitehead of Portland, General Agent of the Pacific Fruit Express.
