Get Up & Go: Saturday, Feb. 7 ... COLLEGE FOOTBALL Islands are Ducks' home away from home Comment By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard MailTribune.com By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard Posted Feb. 6, 2015 @ 8:54 pm By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard Posted Feb. 6, 2015 @ 8:54 pm » Social News EUGENE — Don’t tell Mark Helfrich that Oregon didn’t sign any in-state recruits this cycle. “I think Oregon and Hawaii are our two home states right now,” Helfrich said after signing a 22-man class Wednesday that included three players from the Aloha State. The Ducks landed the No. 1 prospect from Hawaii, five-star defensive lineman Canton Kaumatule, as well as two of the talent-rich state’s other top-10 prospects in defensive lineman Rex Manu and safety Dylan Kane. Oregon has recruited Hawaii for decades. Tight end Russ Francis (1972-73) was inducted into the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame this year. There are a lot more Ducks fans in Hawaii after Marcus Mariota became the state’s first Heisman Trophy winner last season. “Going back a long time, Oregon has had a great tradition of Polynesian players, whether it’s been Hawaii or Samoa. That’s been something we’ve cultivated,” Helfrich said. “Then obviously with the Marcus Mariota phenomenon, that has led to something totally different.” Oregon’s defensive line loses Arik Armstead early to the NFL, and senior-to-be Sam Kamp decided to retire from football after the Ducks’ finished the 2014 season with a loss to Ohio State in the national championship. DeForest Buckner, who is from Waianae, Hawaii, will be one of the leaders on the team after deciding to forgo the NFL draft to finish his Oregon degree and play his senior season for the Ducks. The 6-foot-7, 290-pound senior-to-be said Mariota and the other Hawaiians on the roster made his transition from the islands to Eugene easier. “It’s like a family within a family,” Buckner said before the Rose Bowl. “I didn’t know Marcus at all my freshman year. He let me hang out with him. Him and Bronson Yim took me to spots, and Koa Ka’ai, like where to eat, and all that stuff.” Now Buckner will be able to mentor Kaumatule and Manu on the defensive line, just as former Duck Wade Keliikipi (Waianae) did for him as a young player. The 6-7, 290-pound Kaumatule is already enrolled at Oregon and will have a chance to play alongside fellow Punahou High graduate Buckner next season as a true freshman. “Canton Kaumatule is on campus and he’s huge,” Helfrich said. “He just needs to figure out all the details.” Oregon signed a total of five defensive linemen as well as some offensive linemen capable of playing on either side of the ball after giving up 296 net yards rushing and five touchdowns in the 42-20 loss to the Buckeyes in the College Football Playoff title game. The coaching staff has talked about Mariota’s legacy carrying on inside the program for years to come. His inspiring speech after winning the Heisman, especially when he talked about ohana, won’t soon be forgotten by the families of future Hawaiian recruits. “In Hawaii, if one person is successful, the entire state is successful,” Mariota said in New York. “To be a part of that, it’s so special. It’s hard to explain.” By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard MailTribune.com By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard Posted Feb. 6, 2015 @ 8:54 pm » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox. fantasy football Fantasy Football Outlook for Jets Stars Feb. 7, 2015 at 4:30 am Super Bowl Fantasy Review and Highlights Feb. 2, 2015 at 10:00 am Top Fantasy Players, Projections for Patriots vs. Seahawks Jan. 31, 2015 at 8:39 am Fantasy Football Outlook for Titans Stars Jan. 30, 2015 at 10:37 am 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook for Buccaneers Stars Jan. 28, 2015 at 7:00 am DraftKings Fantasy Pro Bowl, Super Bowl Lineup Jan. 24, 2015 at 11:37 am calendar Connect with MailTribune.com Facebook Twitter RSS Back to top Reader Services Reader Services Home Subscriptions Subscriber controls Contact us Submissions Photos Events Letters to the editor Corrections Announcements Obituaries Story ideas Since you asked Alerts Email Alerts RSS Feeds Text Alerts Advertise Media Kit Home Products and services Ad rates Advertising contacts Mail Tribune Daily Tidings The Nickel Shop Our Valley Blogs Stay Informed Email newsletter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
