Steven Douglas Simone, 36, of Grants Pass originally faced charges of felony coercion and misdemeanor strangulation, fourth-degree assault and harassment for his alleged April 27 attack on Tonja Sue Dazey, 50, at a Medford apartment. But a Jackson County grand jury added Measure 11 charges of attempted murder and second-degree assault, according to the Jackson County District Attorney's Office. Attempted murder carries a minimum sentence of seven-and-a-half years in prison, and second-degree assault carries a minimum sentence of five years and 10 months in prison upon conviction. Simone allegedly hit Dazey in the face and told her he was going to kill her during the assault, according to an affidavit by Medford police. "Simone then grabbed Dazey's throat with both hands and choked her by applying pressure to her neck to the point she lost consciousness. This occurred three separate times during the altercation," the affidavit said. When Dazey tried to leave, Simone grabbed her by the hair and pulled her back, the affidavit said. Simone's $150,000 bail was increased Monday to $500,000 by Jackson County Circuit Court Judge Timothy Barnack. Simone entered pleas of not guilty on the charges and has a pretrial conference set for May 26. In 2013, Simone pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of intoxicants, and he pleaded guilty to third-degree theft in 2014.
