North romps past South in boys tennis Tyler Wilson didn't play Tuesday. But the North Medford boys tennis team didn't need its No. 1 singles player to throttle South Medford, 9-0, at the Rogue Valley Swim and Tennis Club. In Wilson's place, John Falath remained undefeated by giving up just one game against Reilly Ferrell in No. 1 singles action. "When we play a team for the second time, we flip our Nos. 1 and 2 singles," said first-year North coach Larry Fields. "South Medford moved its top two singles players over to doubles, so Tyler would have been playing their No. 4 player." Instead, Wilson sat. Brady Inn moved up from his regular No. 3 singles spots to win at No. 2, and Mateo Mengis, David Heyerman and Tom Tice rolled to straight-set victories in the Nos. 3-5 spots. In doubles action, Clint Russell and Dru Phillips continued their undefeated run by permitting Ben Works and Ferrell - the aforementioned usual Nos. 1 and 2 singles player for the Panthers - just four games. The teams of Andrew Theen and David Mostue, James Bryant and Justin Hanlin and Marco Martin and Joseph Jackson also recorded Tornado doubles victories. The Bryant-Hanlin duo rallied from a 6-3 first-set loss to claim sets two and three, 6-4, 6-1. "That was only their third time out playing doubles," Fields said. "They're gelling together really well." North expects a challenge Thursday, when it plays at Ashland at 4 p.m. The Tornado beat the Grizzlies, 6-3, in the first meeting. SINGLES - John Falath, NM, d. Muir and Delay both shot a 6-over-par 76 to lead the Mustangs to a first-place total of 317. Phoenix finished at 353 with Nick Grimes' 85 leading the way.
