Newsom leads out-of-town qualifiers By KEVIN GOFF Brooks Newsom has been in this position before. The 31-year-old Portland resident has made other area golfers pull out their hair trying to figure out ways to rattle him. Newsom, fresh off his Rogue Valley Stroke Play City Championship title a week ago, once again frustrated the competition by shooting a 1-under-par 71 to earn a share of the top qualifying honors on Wednesday among out-of-town players in the 72nd annual Southern Oregon Golf Tournament. Carl Johnsen and Jim White III, the 2000 runner-up to Tommy Smith, also finished with 71s at the 6,666-yard Rogue Valley Country Club. All out-of-town players and all women players qualified Wednesday. In the men's junior-senior division, Tom Deatherage cruised to a 2-under-par 70 to claim top qualifying honors. John Dunkin shot a 74 in the men's senior division, while Jennifer Ausland's 78 edged out Reena Eklund, who shot a 79 in women's qualifying. Match play begins today, with the first pair in men's play teeing off at 9:40 a.m. The first duo in seniors starts at 7:51 a.m., while the women tee off at 9:03 a.m. The men's junior-senior division follows at 12:21 p.m. Newsom added to his successful golfing summer - which included a Portland City championship - with a strong back nine. The 1998 SOGT champion was 1 over after 11 holes, then began to pick up the pace. Newsom, who was runner-up in 1999 and a semifinalist in 2000, cut the corner with his driver on the 12th hole and picked up a birdie with a shot from the fringe. Birdies on 15 and 16 got Newsom to 2 under, but a rough final two holes pushed him back to 71. He bogeyed 17 and double bogeyed 18. "My goal coming in was to shoot a 69," said Newsom, who three-putted on the 18th. "I had some opportunities off the tee on 17 and 18 but just didn't hit it well." A 69 would have been nice, but just getting into the final 64 match-play portion of the tournament in good position was most important to Newsom. "You can be more aggressive and take more chances (in match play)," he said. Two-time defending champion Tommy Smith earned the No. 1 seed because of his title last year and will play against his father, Dane, who shot an 84 Tuesday in qualifying. Newsom squares off with Robert Miller, who shot an 82. "My game feels pretty solid right now," said Newsom. "I'm hitting the ball farther and have been successful in some tournaments. "I have been playing well this summer." Reach reporter Kevin Goff at 776-4483 or e-mail [email protected] .
