Police say the site has produced a crime wave all by itself in the last year. Police began their investigation in earnest on Nov. 24 when a disturbance call at 2 a.m. led officers to suspect the inn was a den of drug activity and sex crimes involving minor females. Officers arrested several juvenile females on charges of curfew violation and possession of methamphetamine, police said in a press release Thursday. Police reported that the investigation has since focused on Wild River Inn manager and co-owner Carvel Gordon Dillard, 59, of Grants Pass. Grants Pass police and county drug agents served a search warrant at Dillard’s home and the inn’s office on Monday. An arrest warrant has been issued for Dillard on two charges of second-degree sexual abuse and two counts of prostitution. Dillard remained at large Thursday. He is described as 5 feet 10 inches tall, 200 pounds and driving a black 1998 Land Rover with Oregon license 640-BNL. Police reported that he is known to carry firearms. Police said law enforcement response to the Wild River Inn averaged about 40 calls between 2000 and 2003. But problems — including drug use, weapons complaints, fugitive arrests, disturbances, stolen vehicles, medical emergencies, curfew violations, suspicious people and runaway juveniles — skyrocketed last year with a total of 408 contacts by Grants Pass police. There were more than 80 police-related calls to the inn through mid-February, when officers responded to a shooting in one of the inn’s rooms. Grants Pass police reported that a lawyer representing the inn’s other co-owners said that Dillard’s partnership in the property had been terminated and new management would assume control of the property. Grants Pass Police Chief Joe Henner said in the press release that additional charges are expected. Anyone with information on Dillard’s whereabouts or on illegal activities at the hotel is asked to call Detective Jim Brissette at 541-474-6370.
