The person was almost hit by a car in the next lane who had no idea that the other car had allowed him to cross. I think it is dangerous for a car to stop to allow someone standing between parked cars to jaywalk. What are the laws regarding jaywalking for both the pedestrian and the driver? -- Jerry K., Ashland We understand the frustration, Jerry, but first we need to make one thing clear: It is impossible to "jaywalk" in Oregon, at least not illegally jaywalk. No law prohibiting it exists, according to Medford police Lt. Bob Hansen. However, in the above case, the pedestrian would have been at fault had the car struck him, Hansen said. "If a pedestrian is waiting at a marked or unmarked crosswalk, then it's the driver's responsibility to stop for him," Hansen added. "But if a pedestrian is crossing the street where no crosswalk exists, then it is his responsibility to yield to drivers." Even though the driver had the right-of-way in the situation you cite, Hansen said it is up to drivers and pedestrians to stay alert and cautious while navigating the city.
