GUEST OPINION Manor residents give in many ways By Wayne Thomas MailTribune.com By Wayne Thomas Posted Sep. 14, 2014 @ 12:01 am By Wayne Thomas Posted Sep. 14, 2014 @ 12:01 am » Social News The letter from Carolyn Shaw (Sept. 10) demands a response, as it is obvious Ms. Shaw is unaware of the scope and magnitude of the benefit Rogue Valley Manor residents bring to our area. Ms. Shaw implicitly assumes that the residents care only for themselves and do not serve the community as a whole. That is so very incorrect. RVM residents have for years given generously of both their money and time to many of the charitable and faith-based organizations in the area. As the first of numerous possible examples, RVM residents support ACCESS — both at the corporate and at the resident levels. “The residents of the manor have been very generous with both their time and their money for …ACCESS … We at ACCESS appreciate and need all the support given by the manor residents.” — Logan Bell, ACCESS director of development. “I don’t believe there’s a charity in the Rogue Valley that doesn’t benefit from Rogue Valley Manor residents…Manor residents' total giving ranks in the top 10 of all giving campaigns! …[W]e are a better, smarter, more engaged community because of those living there.” — Dee Anne Everson, executive director, United Way. “[RVM] residents are very supportive of the needs of people in our community … [including] Community Health Center, [which] is very grateful for the generosity of Rogue Valley Manor residents.” — Karen Elliott, marketing director, Community Health Center. Residents have a particularly soft spot for children and youth. “Our community is truly fortunate to have the resource of experienced and generous residents living at [RVM] … CASA is not only a direct recipient of Manor residents’ financial support but also of their valuable time in volunteering as CASAs … They make a difference for everyone who lives here.” Jennifer Mylenek, executive director, Court Appointed Special Advocates of Jackson County.  Since 1997, the Fairy Godmothers, a group of Manor residents, have given over 200 college scholarships to highly qualified but disadvantaged girls, together with one-on-one mentoring. Manor residents currently mentor 24 young women who have received scholarships — currently at $3,300 per year for two years. The Manor Mentors, a group of RVM men, serve as mentors to boys that are struggling with school in Medford’s three public high schools. These are young men with the potential to succeed but who have not lived up to their promise because of challenges faced all too often by some of our youth, such as poverty, addiction and abuse in the family, even homelessness. So far, 100 percent of these young men who became seniors have graduated and nearly all have gone on to further education. This is a far higher graduation rate than the Medford School District has experienced for the entire student body. It is hard to imagine what the local art scene would be but for the support of RVM residents. One of them, Jim Collier, has given so generously that Medford's Craterian theater was renamed The Collier Center for the Performing Arts. Livia Genise, the artistic director of Camelot Theatre Company, sums it up: “Camelot would not have been able to stay open when we lost our old property if not for the generosity of the Rogue Valley Manor and other donors. Since the beginning of the Capitol Campaign for a new theater building … until the present, Camelot has received $609,000 from 75 Manor residents/couples … [Camelot has] received $38,611 from 36 individuals in 2013 alone.” Residents are also key supporters of Chamber Music Concerts, the Britt Festivals and other arts organizations. RVM has about 550 employees, placing it in among the 15 largest year-round employers in Jackson County. We greatly value these employees, who give us residents such excellent service. RVM’s budget for the coming fiscal year anticipates spending $44 million on operations, 43 percent of which is for employees’ salaries and benefits, in addition to substantial additional capital improvement costs. Nearly all of that stays right here in the area, benefiting nearly everyone. It may be understandable that Ms. Shaw is unaware of the foregoing, because we residents give of our time and money the same as do other citizens — privately and without fanfare. We neither expect nor ask for any special recognition for what we do, as we consider ourselves very much part of our community and we want to help further the best interest of the community as best we can.
