The 28-year-old victim was shopping at Kohl’s in the Rogue Valley Mall with her three children when she was approached by a woman — described as in her 20s —  claiming that her husband had been injured in a hit-and-run and was being treated at the hospital. The woman then produced what she said was a bag of diamonds that she said fell from the vehicle that hit her husband. She then offered the victim a “too good to be true” deal on the diamonds, said Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau. “The victim was skeptical but then another person intervened in the conversation posing as a happy customer,” he said. The suspect’s accomplice showed the victim an envelope of cash and said she had just cashed in one of the diamonds and made an $8,000 profit. Convinced of the diamond’s authenticity, the victim then drove the suspect to the bank where she withdrew $6,000 and purchased one of the diamonds, which she later learned was fake. The police officer who filed the report said the diamond was “obviously fake,” Budreau said. “But, apparently, it wasn't obvious to everyone,” he added. Budreau said Medford police see variations of this scam every year or two. Scammers with similar tales of woe try to sell fake diamonds, gold or silver to victims who are often convinced by a happy customer. Typically, the scammers target the Hispanic community and most likely leave town afterward, Budreau said, adding that in the recent case the victim, suspect and suspect’s accomplice were all Hispanic. The suspect was described as a short, heavier female wearing a white visor, and the suspect’s accomplice as a tall, thin female, also in her 20s. Medford police are working with the store to obtain surveillance video of the suspects, Budreau said.
