Eleven workers were inside Pete's Gourmet Confections at 3100 Merriman Road when carbon monoxide filled the air. Medford Fire-Rescue Chief Brian Fish said levels of 35 parts per million will trigger an alarm on handheld readers used by rescue workers, but at the source of the leak inside the building, readings were above 500 parts per million. "That could really cause some neurological issues," Fish said. "They were having headaches." Readings outside the building showed carbon monoxide levels of between 80 and 225 ppm, Fish said. Firefighters were alerted to the carbon monoxide poisoning at 4:48 p.m. Fish said response was swift because the location was just down the street from the fire station near Railroad Park. The source of the carbon monoxide had not yet been determined, but firefighters suspected malfunctioning equipment, Fish said. Firefighters cleared the air inside the concrete building, which Jackson County property records list as 8,400 square feet. Portions of the building were difficult to ventilate, according to Fish. "It takes a while to get (carbon monoxide) out," Fish said. An Avista employee investigated the source as paramedics monitored the affected employees. Fish said some may suffer from headaches or elevated blood pressure because of the exposure. Workers at Pete's Gourmet Confections make marshmallows and other sweets. Fish said no one was rendered unconscious or seriously injured from the incident, but paramedics monitored gas levels in the workers' blood. Readings above 5 percent can be dangerous, Fish said. Those transported to the hospital needed oxygen therapy, but others were monitored in the shade. "They're just resting," Fish said. "We're giving them water and keeping them hydrated."
