CITY GOVERNMENT Former Medford city attorney takes job in Curry County Comment By Damian Mann Mail Tribune Follow @@reporterdm MailTribune.com By Damian Mann Mail Tribune Follow @@reporterdm Posted Jan. 25, 2016 at 12:01 AM By Damian Mann Mail Tribune Follow @@reporterdm Posted Jan. 25, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Former Medford City Attorney John Huttl has resigned to take a similar position in Curry County. “Medford’s a tremendous place to live,” he said. “I will miss the place.” Huttl’s wife, Dawn, died May 15, 2015, and he said they both had plans to build a house on property they owned in Curry County. His wife had Lou Gehrig’s disease. “Before she died, she gave me clear signs she wanted to build that project,” Huttl said. Huttl had earlier stepped down from his position as city attorney to spend more time helping his wife. When Huttl returned from leave after his wife’s death, he worked as a deputy city attorney. Lori Cooper replaced him as city attorney. Recent changes in benefits for the Public Employees Retirement System also were a factor in his decision to leave the city, he said. Huttl has worked for the city since 2001. His last day on the job was Friday, and he will start working for Curry County on Monday. When the attorney for Curry County retired after 30 years, Huttl saw an opportunity and applied for the job. Some of the highlights of his time in Medford include resolving a complicated water rights case, winning a Supreme Court case over Walmart and settling a dispute over a low-income housing complex. At a City Council meeting recently, Councilor Tim Jackle praised Huttl's ability to resolve difficult disputes by bringing together all sides. Huttl said he plans to live at the coast for about 10 years, but eventually wants to move back to Medford. “I’ve got a lot of good friends in town,” he said.
