Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend November 16, 2005 Jacksonville restores Chinese celebration Chinese New Year is coming back to Jacksonville, says Jeresa Hren. After being canceled by the Chamber of Commerce in 2005, the cultural event is staging a triumphant return with three days of festivities, says Hren. Hren was disappointed when the chamber canceled last year’s event citing lack of funding, dwindling volunteer efforts and disinterest in the town’s Chinese heritage. Current Chamber President Terri Geig supported the Taiwan native — who moved to Jacksonville seven years ago — in forming the Southern Oregon Asian Cultural Association Chapter this spring. Grieg and Hren said the group has been holding monthly planning meetings since June and plan to bring a bigger and better celebration to the Rogue Valley in February 2006, says Hren. On Feb. 3, Southern Oregon University will host the cultural association’s historical exhibit at the Schneider Museum of Art. Jacksonville will host the parade featuring the popular lion dancers and a cultural exhibit at the U.S. Hotel. Hren says a famous Taiwanese artist will create murals on local buildings. And on Feb. 5, the cultural association will hold a "condensed version" of their whole affair at Kids Unlimited in Medford. "All proceeds will go to Kids Unlimited," said Hren.
