Neighbors on both sides of us have lost llamas, goats and sheep to cougars. it's unfortunate that what the Rogue River neighbors do to provoke those dogs didn't come out. Two sides to every story. We are blessed to live in a farming community with neighbors who understand there may be noise associated with farming. Listening to cows bellow during breeding season, tractors running at all hours, propane cannons that keep birds off of orchards, wind machines to ward off frost, and yes, guardian dogs barking when needed. Why do people move into a farming community and then complain about the sounds associated with it? Under ORS 30.936 these are protected farm practices. The next time you go to one of our wonderful farmers markets and admire the newly spun fibers that make beautiful apparel or enjoy local foods and wines, remember what goes into growing and protecting the product. Maybe it's time for you to move to the city, where you will only have to listen to sirens, tires screeching, people yelling, horns honking and music blaring. Marijane Jorgenson Williams KKK information needed I’ve been conducting research for a book chapter on the “Women of the Ku Klux Klan” (WKKK) in Oregon in the 1920s. Almost all of the written records and other materials related to this group were kept secret and later destroyed. To try to learn as much as possible about this auxillary organization of the Ku Klux Klan, I’m looking for people who might be willing to share information on the activities of either the WKKK (“Women of the Ku Klux Klan”) or LOTIES (“Ladies of the Invisible Empire”) in Southern Oregon. Hardwick University of Oregon A poor argument Robin Sparks suggests (May 13) that “allowing people to fill their own gas tanks will cause jobs to be lost.” While that may be true in the short term, by the same reasoning, we should pass laws requiring us to pay someone to tie our shoes, brush our teeth and pick up our dirty undies. Throughout history, jobs have come and gone. Ms. Sparks is the beneficiary of an economy that has been made efficient by eliminating unnecessary jobs such as milkmen, bowling pin setters and elevator operators while creating useful jobs such as dental hygienists, web developers and electricians. Paying people to do unnecessary jobs is literally like breaking our windows so the glaziers can be fully employed making new ones. While it is true that the glaziers are fully employed, we don’t see what useful things could have been produced by that glazier doing something else. People with little understanding of economics can always do their share to boost employment by breaking the windows of their own homes. Meanwhile Oregon remains one of only two states where I have to wait for an attendant to fill my tank and then pay for the privilege!
