Hunter Talon Marlow, 18, pleaded guilty on Friday to counts that included unlawfully firing a gun, first-degree attempted assault and recklessly endangering other people. On Nov. 8, 2014, Marlow and a female friend were spray-painting a mailbox in front of a home. A man who lived at the home was sitting on the porch and stood up. Marlow fired a gun at the man, said Marlow's defense attorney, Andrew Vandergaw. The bullet hit the man's house near where the man was standing. The man's wife was asleep in the house at the time of the shooting, according to a police affidavit. Jackson County Circuit Judge Lorenzo Mejia chastised Marlow for his behavior. "I know it's hard to hear the word 'stupid' and not take it as an insult," Mejia said. "This is stupid, and you're so young." Mejia said he didn't feel good about sentencing a young person to prison, but it was the only responsible thing to do. Flanked by two law enforcement officers, Marlow appeared in court in a gray-and-white-striped jail uniform, tattoos covering his arms and neck. Mejia told Marlow he had decorated himself in such a way that he had already handicapped himself in life. "Good God, man. What are you doing to yourself? You've got to turn this around," Mejia said. According to the Jackson County District Attorney's Office, Marlow was also involved in a gang-related shooting at Black Bird Shopping Center. Parties in multiple vehicles were yelling at each other and shots were fired during the September incident, witnesses said. Marlow shot toward another vehicle. He dropped his cellphone at the scene, which connected him to the incident, according to the DA's Office. In December, Marlow pleaded guilty to attempting to unlawfully purchase a firearm from Big 5 Sporting Goods. He tried to purchase a rifle, but the purchase was denied because of Marlow's previous juvenile felony adjudications. Marlow lied on a firearms transaction record, falsely saying he had no previous felony convictions, according to a police affidavit.  Marlow was sentenced to 10 days in jail and 18 months of probation in that case.
