The fifth-ranked Comets crowned seven champions, qualified 15 individuals for state and won the six-team Class 5A Midwestern League championship in convincing fashion at North Eugene High on Saturday. The Eagles, last year’s district champions and ranked ninth by Oregon Wrestler, earned 14 individual state berths and claimed third, just 7.5 points shy of second. Eight Eagle Point wrestlers made it into finals, with one champion emerging. The state tournament is Friday and Saturday at Memorial Coliseum in Portland. The top four finishers in each weight class at districts qualified. The Comets wrapped up with 451.5 points, followed by second-ranked Churchill (355) and the Eagles (347.5). For Crater, Zeth Brower (106 pounds), Hunter Grant (113), Logan Meek (145), Jace Godley (152), Cavin Gillispie (182), Wally Pendleton (195) and Beau Crawford (220) captured titles. Michael Hammond was Eagle Point’s champion at 132. Mitchell Childress (113), Collin Lee (132), Tommy Winningham (170) and Javon Gill (285) all took second for the Comets. For the Eagles, Thomas Zomerdyk (106), Nabor Garcia (126), Bryan O’Neil (138), Ryan Lorenz (145), Gage Graves (160), Scott Martin (182) and Taylor Lawler (220) placed second. The Comets’ third-place finishers were Angel Diaz (106) and Dallas Howard (120). For Eagle Point, thirds went to Chance McMullen (113), Conor Gaines (138), Joseph Garcia (182) and Jacob Lee (285). Coming in fourth for Crater were Bryce Cwiklinski (126) and Cameron Savage (145), while Eagle Point’s Jaime De La Cruz (120) and Noah Sitzer (152) also placed fourth. Ashland qualified four for state with fourth-place finishes by Cedar Barnes (170), Zach Alder (182), Caleb Ostmo (195) and Liam Weston (220). Henley won the team title with 366 points, followed by Marshfield (341.5) and Phoenix (189.5). Cedar King (138), Mark McAllister (145) and Justin Knight (170) all claimed second for the Pirates.
