Troopers believe Carl T. Morris was driving westbound when a bird flew into the open window of his 2001 GMC pickup, causing him to lose control of the vehicle, according to an OSP news release. The vehicle rolled over and came to rest on its roof in a ditch near milepost 24, police said. Troopers responded to the crash around 2:20 p.m., along with Lake Creek firefighters, Mercy Flights, the Oregon Department of Transportation and Jackson County sheriff's deputies. Morris had to be extricated from the vehicle by emergency personnel and was taken to a Medford-area hospital, where he later died. Police said he was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.
