Phoenix rolls to Umpqua tourney championship MYRTLE CREEK - Ten Phoenix wrestlers won championships, including several freshmen, and the Pirates rolled to the team title in the South Umpqua Invitational Saturday. Phoenix scored 216 points, easily outdistancing runner-up Myrtle Point, which had 126 points, in the six-team event. Rogue River was fifth with 57 points. Among the Pirates' highlights were wins by Chris Vogt at 130 pounds and Ricky Farrell at 145 - both over opponents they previously lost to. Vogt pinned Ben Brown of Gold Beach in the title match in 3:47. He led 5-3 at the time of the fall. "They are both pretty physical, high-intensity kids," said Phoenix assistant coach Joe Hagler. "Chris really went after him. Sometimes it's hard to get high school kids motivated when they've lost to a kid before." Vogt had fallen 5-3 to Brown in a tournament at North Bend. Farrell defeated Chancey Cagley of Myrtle Point, 12-6, for the crown. Cagley had beaten him by seven points at North Bend. Farrell was among the freshmen who won. Others were Kris Kaufman (103) and John Rowden (140). Others Pirates who were impressive were Ben Workman (125), who defeated a defending champion, and Paul Stierle, who usually competes behind Nick Acord at 160.
