NEWSROOM Mail Tribune announces leadership changes in the newsroom Hunter assumes part-time role; Noah becomes editor Comment By Vickie Aldous Mail Tribune Follow @@VickieAldous MailTribune.com By Vickie Aldous Mail Tribune Follow @@VickieAldous Posted Sep. 1, 2016 at 12:01 AM Updated Sep 1, 2016 at 9:43 AM By Vickie Aldous Mail Tribune Follow @@VickieAldous Posted Sep. 1, 2016 at 12:01 AM Updated Sep 1, 2016 at 9:43 AM » Social News The Mail Tribune newsroom is changing leaders, with Editor Bob Hunter stepping into a part-time editing role and Cathy Noah, the newspaper's city editor, succeeding him as editor. The change will be effective Sept. 17. Hunter, 63, came to the Mail Tribune in 1985 as city editor and was named editor in 1993. He previously worked in editing and reporting jobs for the Roseburg News-Review, the Times Publications in Washington County and the Polk County Itemizer-Observer in Dallas. "I realized after 40-odd years in the newspaper business that I hadn't had two consecutive weeks off in, well, in about 40 years, and thought maybe it's time to spend a little more time out of the office," Hunter said. "I'm also grateful that we were able to make the part-time editing position work," he said, "because I wasn't ready to go from 90 miles an hour to zero. And I'm very comfortable with this move because I know what a hard worker and dedicated journalist Cathy is and I have all the faith in the world that she'll do a great job." Mail Tribune Publisher Grady Singletary said Hunter has been a progressive leader in the newsroom, effectively combining print and digital platforms. "Under his guidance our talented news staff has been recognized by winning numerous awards within the state and across GateHouse as well," said Singletary. GateHouse Media is the Mail Tribune's parent company. "As an editor, he is highly regarded and respected within our community and that of course speaks volumes about his recognition in the region," Singletary added. "Fortunately, he will remain with us as associate editor and will support the department and our newly appointed editor. "Without question, both Bob and I felt strongly about naming Cathy as editor. She has earned the opportunity to guide the newsroom and we look forward to her expanded leadership role." Noah, 55, has deep roots in the Rogue Valley community. She grew up in the town of Rogue River and earned a bachelor's degree in communications from Southern Oregon University, then called Southern Oregon State College. Noah was a reporter for the Ashland Daily Tidings for several years before joining the Grants Pass Daily Courier in 1984. She was promoted to features editor at the age of 25. After working in marketing for several companies in Newport for seven years, she returned to the Rogue Valley to become team leader at the Mail Tribune in 1999. She then served as city editor for nine years. "I'm so glad Bob is staying on half-time to help me with the transition," Noah said. "He's been a great boss and has led us through the most challenging years journalism has ever known with wisdom, patience and kindness. I have some big shoes to fill." Noah said she is fortunate to have great writers, editors and photographers in the Mail Tribune newsroom who are passionate about journalism. "My goal is to support them the best way I can and continue to inform and engage our readers with interesting stories about their communities," she said. In her spare time, Noah writes short plays and has been produced in Manhattan, Seattle, North Hollywood and Ashland. She is the Mail Tribune's first female editor.
