St. Mary's avenges loss to Rogue River Chieftains drop into 4-way tie for second place St. Mary's scored once in each half Saturday and a strong defensive effort made it stand up for a 2-0 District 6 girls soccer victory over visiting Rogue River. The victory boosted the Crusaders' league record to 3-4-1 and avenged a 3-2 loss to Rogue River at the start of the season. "We were ahead 60 of the 80 minutes the first game of the season," St. Mary's coach Mike Dunn said. "We made a few mistakes and they scored three goals at the end. Today, we were much quicker to the ball." The loss dropped Rogue River into a second-place tie with Henley, North Valley and Mazama, while keeping St. Mary's in the playoff hunt. "Our goal was to finish in the top three," Dunn said. "We need to win three of our last six games." Freshman Emily Smith put the Crusaders on top midway through the first half. Smith took a pass from Margo Chamberlain, spun around two defenders and buried a shot in the lower right-corner of the net. Mary Eagle clinched the victory with a goal with five minutes left, with an assist from Leah Sawyer. Eagle booted the ball just inside the left pole and beyond Rogue River goalie Allison Bailey's reach. St. Mary's goalkeeper Annie Maurer registered her second shutout, making several horizontal stops. HENLEY 3, HIDDEN VALLEY 1 -- At Murphy, Henley grabbed a 3-0 halftime lead on goals by Becky Schwartz, Cathy Mayer and Emily Mathis. Hidden Valley scored with 30 seconds remaining in the match on a goal by Nicole Chapman. The Hornets outshot the Mustangs, 15-5. MAZAMA 11, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 -- At Klamath Falls, Dena Young scored four goals -- all in the first half -- to give the Mazama forward 20 on the season. The Vikings (4-2-2) took a 7-0 halftime lead. Mindy Bishop and Kay Ortega each added a pair of goals. NORTH VALLEY 0, PHOENIX 0 -- At Talent, District 6 front-runner Phoenix failed to extend its five-game winning streak, but remained firmly in first place after playing 100 scoreless minutes. The Pirates outshot the Knights 25-8, but couldn't get past the tandem of goalies Malloree Enoch and Marissa Bauer at Hagler-James Park. Phoenix's Jennifer Bones unleased 12 shots without success. The Pirates got standout play from inside fullbacks Amber Fry and Jessica Prisbrey, while defender Mara Supan played well in place of Chelsi Clark, who injured her hand in first half.
