Meanwhile: 1. War is not working. 2. Peace treaties written by the "victor" sow the seeds for the next war. 3. Wars are planned by older men who like games. 4. Young men and women die without realizing their potential. 5. We profess to believe that we should "Love thy Neighbor," yet soldiers are taught the opposite. No wonder they come home sick in mind, body and spirit. Thousands join "Vets for Peace," as only they know the terrible price of war. 6. If we practiced more justice, there would be fewer riots. 7. Benefactors of war: Weapons manufacturers 8. Money not spent on munitions could change the world. 9. America would do better to address our own problems rather than fighting other countries' wars. Carola Lacy Ashland Promoting redistribution "Inclusionary housing." Kind of makes you feel all warm and fuzzy, right? Ms. Brooks’ impassioned guest opinion makes the term sound like a benign concept to solve all of the issues perceived in her view of "housing affordability." Nonsense. There is no societal mandate that every person in the Rogue Valley be given the keys to home ownership. If a person qualifies for a mortgage, that person is free to purchase a home within their budget. Some folks even choose to rent or lease their homes. Some do not qualify for a mortgage and will not be able to own a home in any circumstance. Ms. Brooks’ premise is really nothing more than another subtle example of the progressive liberal attempt to promote income redistribution with a shade of class warfare. Brooks suggests that developers and homebuilders should subsidize “our teachers, nurses, firefighters who struggle to find housing that is affordable.” Brooks might want to do a little homework on the starting salaries for these professions! Brooks needs to catch a dose of reality. It is not the government’s role nor obligation to decide who owns or doesn't own property. Thinly veiled redistribution scams are just that, scams. Ted Krempa Medford Stop poaching Oregon, tracking similar initiatives in Washington and California, is posed to ban wildlife trafficking with the November 2016 proposed ballot measure prohibiting the sale of products and parts from elephants, rhinos, tigers, lions, leopards, cheetahs, jaguars, whales and other critically threatened or endangered species. The act will be known as the "Wildlife Trafficking Prevention Act, and amends Section 2, ORS 498.022. Poachers have been known to hack off elephants' and rhinos' faces for the tusks or horns while the animals are still alive. Approximately 35,000 elephants are killed in Africa yearly for their ivory. Only 29,000 rhinos remain in the wild with 1,200 killed in 2014 in South Africa alone. Poachers have poisoned a watering hole recently with cyanide, killing 300 elephants at once and other animals who fed on their carcasses. Don't forget our beloved Cecil the lion, killed in 2015 by wealthy Minnesota dentist, Walter Palmer. Cecil's untimely and tragic demise brought to the forefront the urgency and necessity for the public to take action to save endangered species from poaching, cruelty, and the threat of extinction.
