North gets off to a sweeping start North Medford started the SOC softball season in excellent fashion on Tuesday, taking both games of a doubleheader against Grants Pass at Fagone Field. In the first game North Medford�s Steph Coe had eight strikeouts, no walks and allowed only three hits to lead the Black Tornado to a 2-1 win in eight innings. North won the nightcap 5-0. "Coe did a really good job and battled hard," North Medford coach Sara Barry said. The senior pitcher has yet to give up an earned run this season. With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the eighth the Tornado got three straight base hits to load the bases with no outs. After a fielder�s choice, pinch hitter Corey Whitaker put the ball in play and Coe was able to score off a Grants Pass error. Britney Hillyer and Haley Varley both went 2-for-4 for North Medford. Seanna Doyel scored the lone run for Grants Pass off a North Medford error in the fourth inning. In the second game North Medford received a one hit shut-out performance from Keri Sevano. Sevano had five strikeouts and five walks. Amy Allen had a three-run triple in the fourth inning for North Medford and finished the game 2-for-3. North Medford (5-2, 2-0 SOC) also received doubles from Tai Kinney and Darcy Cordell. Doyel had the only hit for Grants Pass. KLAMATH UNION 2-4, SOUTH MEDFORD 1-0 � At Klamath Falls, freshman Beth Fagan blanked South Medford on one hit in the second game as Klamath Union swept the Panthers at Conger Field. After South Medford pitcher Darci Byrne worked through the Klamath lineup without allowing a baserunner, the Pelicans recorded five of their six hits in a four-run fourth inning. Grace Fagan drove in the first run. Then Tashina Skeen tripled to right field, scoring two more runs. Heidi Brookshire drove in the final run. In the first game, Wendy Willhite�s sacrifice fly to center field drove in Hannah James with the winning run in the fourth inning after South tied it 1-1 in the top of the frame. Grace Fagan had two hits, including an RBI triple. In the first game the Grizzlies (4-4, 1-1 SOC) hit four straight singles to ignite a three-run fifth inning. Jenna Graven went 3-for-4 with a double for the Grizzlies In the second game Molly Liston pitched a two-hit shutout for the Indians. She also had seven strikeouts. In the first game Leann Foster went 2-for-3 for Crater with three runs batted in. In the second game Diane Steele went 4-for-4 with three runs batted in, and scored twice for the Comets. The Eagles fell to 5-5 on the season.
