Balanced Phoenix girls dump Mazama PHOENIX - Doing just enough to stave off visiting Mazama, the Phoenix girls basketball team pounded out a 46-42 victory Tuesday night to improve to 2-2 in Skyline Conference play. Junior post Tiffany Ross produced 12 points and nine rebounds to pace the Pirates (4-8, 2-2 Skyline), who also got 10 points from sophomore wing Kat Cox and nine points and six steals from junior point guard Jennifer Dunlap. The Vikings (3-8, 1-3 Skyline) were topped by senior Lindsey English's game-high 19 points. Despite shooting just 9 of 35 from the field mostly against a zone defense in the first half, Phoenix had a 24-16 lead at halftime. The Pirates implemented a 1-3-1 zone to hold Mazama to just two points in the second quarter. "We felt pretty good to lead by eight without making many shots," Phoenix head coach Kyle Walker said. Cox hit a 3-pointer in the waning seconds of the third quarter to put the Pirates ahead 33-30 entering the fourth. Then Phoenix reverted to its 1-3-1 defense and Dunlap drilled two big free throws to keep the Vikings at bay down the stretch. Ford poured in 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while Anderson added 11 points and 12 boards for Mustangs (12-2, 4-0 Skyline). The Knights (10-2, 4-0 Skyline) held a five-point halftime lead but broke the game open with effective transition play in the third quarter by outscoring the Chieftains 15-4. Sophomore forward Whitney Makepeace gave North Valley a boost off the bench with eight rebounds and five points. For Rogue River, Rachelle Troutt tallied 11 points. Senior guard Sarah Gordon, the Cougars' leading scorer, had 18 points, and senior post Michelle Baker grabbed a season-high 16 rebounds.
