http://www.omniture.com --> Email Story to a Friend June 19, 2006 Fawn rescued from abandoned mine shaft By Paris Achen Mail Tribune Three years after plucking a black Labrador from an abandoned mine shaft in Jacksonville, firefighters returned to the mine Sunday to rescue a small fawn. The fawn squeezed through a wrought iron fence blocking off the shaft as it fled from a pursuing dog. It fell about 20 feet into the mine near the Rich Gulch Trail south of the Britt Gardens. The dog's owners who witnessed the chase summoned Jacksonville Fire Department and the Applegate Technical Rescue Team from Fire District No. 9 to rescue the fawn. The fawn was standing on a pile of debris, including the cab of a rusted truck. Firefighters lowered Applegate Fire Lt. Cody Goodnough into the mine to fetch the fawn, which was perched on a pile of debris. Partially blocking the shaft was a rusted truck cab. "It was easier this time because we had been in the mine before," said Derek Bates, operations chief for the Jacksonville department. "We knew the cab was stable. We knew how much rope we needed, and we used the same trees as anchors." Once Goodnough and the fawn emerged from the shaft unharmed, the fawn was returned to the woods. Thad Olsen, shift commander for the Jacksonville department, carried the fawn about 50 yards away and released it in an open space. "It trotted down the trail," Olsen said. "Hopefully, its mom is around. It's definitely a Bambi." The Jacksonville Woodlands Association added the wrought iron fencing around the shaft in 2003 after the rescue of the Labrador. However, the spaces between the fence bars are 3 1/2 inches wide, large enough for the fawn to slip through. Jacksonville firefighters said they plan to recommend that the association plug the mine.
