Much of the proposed pipeline would cross private lands, with or without the permission of the landowners, using eminent domain. You see, this is a “public works” project and, like similar projects such as roads and dams, it is automatically assumed to benefit the general public and deserve the use of eminent domain. However, in my opinion the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and its industry counterparts have failed to show sufficient benefits to Southern Oregonians to counter the significant negative impacts. The use of eminent domain is a serious infringement of personal property rights and should be reserved for projects that truly offer lasting benefits to local people, which the Pacific Connector Pipeline does not. Imagine it was your property’s value at stake, how helpless you’d feel. Please join me in support of our neighbors by opposing this project and attending the public hearing and rally on Dec. 11 at 5 p.m. at Central High School in Medford. We must stand together and show Governor Kitzhaber and Senators Wyden and Merkley that Oregonians will not tolerate such blatant abuse of our rights. Jordan Beaver, Ashland Tired of Ferguson I'm a little tired of hearing about Ferguson's problems. All of these protests about the outcome of the grand jury findings. Do any of the protesters know all the facts? Stores have been looted and burned down. And all I hear about is the protesters all over the states. Maybe someone should try and find out what the grand jury knew when they made their decision. Dace Cochran has the same rights as everyone else to state his beliefs. I believe the Bible as Dace does. Does not mean I hate or even dislike gays. They have the same rights as Dace. I think he is being persecuted for his beliefs. I believe everyone has the right to their beliefs, but not to force them down other believers' throats. Whether it is not agreeing with the grand jury, or believing the Bible or not. Paint at least your face and neck, hide hair as necessary, keep your hands in your pockets (which itself is grounds for being stopped even when it's snowing (The Daily Show) and, if possible, mimic the appearance of a young male. If you're feeling especially bold, shop for a BB gun or sell cigarettes without collecting tax. Police and Florida vigilantes won't know who to stop, harass, arrest, choke, or shoot. Hunter Greer, Ashland A step backward I was recently shocked to learn that a huge fracked natural gas export project which, when combined with other LNG projects proposed for the Northwest would have greater climate change impact than the Keystone pipeline, is being planned for construction in Oregon, running right through Jackson County. Every day we hear, see and feel the growing impact of climate change on our beautiful planet. I know I am not alone in wishing there could be something I could do to reverse this phenomenon that threatens the future of our children. According to The Oregonian, the Jordan Cove LNG terminal would become the largest emitter of carbon-filled greenhouse gases in Oregon. There are many reasons this is wrong for Jackson County, Oregon and the whole country, including environmental impacts, safety issues and potential increases in our own domestic gas prices. Governor Kitzhaber has pledged to reduce carbon emissions from the state of Oregon. We need to stand with him and make our voices heard on Dec. 11 at Central Medford High School at 5 p.m. when the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission holds a hearing to ask for public comment on this project. We can stop this.
