Ashland ready to hire new superintendent ASHLAND -- The Ashland School Board is expected on Monday to hire Juli Di Chiro, a school administrator from Santa Monica, Calif., as the new superintendent of Ashland schools. She will replace John Daggett, who is retiring June 30 after 12 years leading the district and more than 31 years in public education. The board is expected to formally approve Di Chiro's contract during its monthly meeting on Monday. Di Chiro, who will attend the meeting, emerged as the only finalist during a community interview process begun last year. The process included a visit to Santa Monica by board members and staff to check her references. For two years, Di Chiro has worked as the director of standards, assessment and evaluation for the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District. Most of her time is spent implementing new California state legislative initiatives focused on school and student standards. Prior to that, she was an elementary school principal for 10 years and has a total of 25 years' experience in education. She and her husband, a musician, have three children, one in junior high school, one in high school and one in college. Di Chiro said in March during her interview with the school district that Santa Monica and Ashland have a lot in common. "They both have a high level of public engagement, communities that care deeply about education and have an emphasis on the arts," she said.
