It brought back the intense sorrow I felt when the 3-year-old granddaughter of a close friend died from an intractable seizure disorder. The young child featured in this film was treated with a variety of pot that was low in THC, high in CBD, stopping the seizures with no associated “high.” Before treatment, the child was non-interactive socially, and significantly behind in developmental milestones. When the seizures were controlled with high-CBD pot, her neurological and social growth resumed. There are several strains of high-CBD pot currently available. I assume the recreational pot market is seeking high-THC strains, which are currently available as medical pot,and taxed at a lower rate. It is no surprise that recreational users might seek medical qualification, or utilize the black market. One option might include offering only low-THC/high-CBD pot to medical-marijuana card holders, and charging no tax for medical pot. The recreational pot market could be steered to shops offering certification that their products are free of mold, pesticides etc., coupled with a moderate tax rate that would make the risks of the black market less attractive. Susan D. Elsom, Ashland Police need prayers The recent Wednesday, Dec. 31 Mail Tribune letter "Pray for police officers" courtesy of Gordon DeVos was timely. Law enforcement historically remains high-stress, demanding, dangerous, and yes, often depressing. I don't think anyone will disagree with that statement. Also, the October 2014 Police Chief Magazine features an article addressing police suicides (www.policechiefmagazine.com). Granted time and space doesn't permit addressing this traumatic issue here. Suffice to say I'll allow someone far more qualified than me to address it. So how can the community support local law enforcement? Naturally the Christian Community/Body of Christ (the churches collectively) can unite together in intercessory prayer not only for our law enforcement officers, but likewise for the safety, sanctify, morality, and spiritual sanity of our nation (a republic), including our communities. The Bible states: "Pray without ceasing."  (1 Thessalonians 5:17.) The John Birch Society in Appleton, Wisc., at The John Birch Society and www.thenewamerican.com respectively, has their "Support Your Local Police" campaign. In conclusion, read my own Dec. 3 Ashland Daily Tidings letter, "Protests not spontaneous." This addresses the Ferguson, Mo., anti-police protests and can be read at www.dailytidings.com. James A. Farmer, Ashland What's unnatural? The proposed gas line to Coos Bay would create a long, skinny clearcut of a fraction over 1,406 acres. As I recall from doing trail maintenance while working for the U.S. Forest Service, their trail manual called for a minimum 10-foot wide brush line centered on the tread of the trail. This would make the Pacific Crest Trail a long, skinny clea cut of a fraction over 3,103 acres — 120-plus percent of the pipeline. Unnatural corridor indeed! A.W. Cabler, Medford Financial advice I was stunned to read the advice you published in "Rich and Restful." Do you read this stuff before you reprint it? "Create awesome online content" — that generates income how? By some unstated miraculous process? And "trade currencies"? A zero-sum trading strategy that even giant investment banks occasionally lose massively on. Seriously, advice to "take up panhandling" would be more responsible. At least you won't lose your shirt.
