Mail Tribune / Jim Craven Mail Tribune staffers receive journalism honors By ROBERT GALVIN Mail Tribune Three members of the Mail Tribune news staff received first-place honors Saturday as the Society of Professional Journalists Northwest announced its Excellence in Journalism awards. Reporter JoNel Aleccia (Food, Fashion and Home coverage) and photographer Jim Craven (Feature Photography) took top honors. Meanwhile, Mail Tribune reporter Jack Moran received first-place in Government Reporting for a story he wrote while still a member of the news staff at the Grants Pass Daily Courier. The three firsts were among nine awards received by Mail Tribune staff members in the competition — which includes newspapers from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Alaska. The Mail Tribune competes against papers with circulations of between 25,000 and 60,000. The Daily Courier competes in the under-25,000 circulation category. Aleccia also received an honorable mention in Criminal Justice reporting. Sports Editor Tim Trower and news reporter Mark Freeman were also double award-winners. Here’s a rundown of the honored Mail Tribune entries: Advertisement Food, Fashion and Home coverage : Aleccia received first place for her July 2003 story "A Way With Curds," which introduced readers to the variety of award-winning cheeses produced by Rogue River Valley Creamery in Central Point. Feature Photography : Craven took top honors for his photo "Doctor Dog," that illustrated with a January 2003 story on dogs used in therapy for seriously ill patients. The picture showed Gleason giving a kiss to 6-year-old Alexann Krumm, a bone cancer patient who would succumb to her illness five months later. Government Reporting : Moran’s story in the Daily Courier detailed the paid-leave package awarded 140 Josephine County department heads and other managers. All begin earning 9 weeks of annual paid leave after just one year of employment — far more than managers in nearby counties. Criminal Justice : Aleccia and Freeman shared a second-place award for "Tragedy in Two Acts" — a two-story package from September 2003 that visited the family of a man killed on Butte Falls Highway by a drunk driver, who nine years earlier had been involved in another fatal crash just a quarter-mile away. Spot News : Freeman received honorable mention for his May 2003 story about a kayaking pleasure trip that turned tragic. "Friends Tried Everything to Save Ashland Kayaker" recounted the final, frantic moments of Jeff Ellis, whose kayak took on water after going over Shackleford Falls in Northern California, and the valiant efforts of his trip-mates to save him. Sports Reporting : Sports Editor Tim Trower received a pair of honorable mentions — one for a news story that details the courageous battle against pancreatic cancer fought, and eventually lost, by former Butte Falls High School football coach Jack Brown. The other award was for a feature story on the legend of Chandler "Chan" Egan — a golfer who won two U.S. Amateur titles and designed the Rogue Valley Country Club. Honorable mentions also went to sports reporter Kris Henry, for a selection of his columns; and to Photo Editor Bob Pennell for a portrait photograph illustrating the variety of options facing forest management officials.
