LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, May 18 Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 18, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted May. 18, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Get with it, Medford The city of Medford needs to get with it. Growth is good for Medford. We need more than just new parking lots and cop shops. Let Costco move where it would like and let the SkyPark project move in above the existing boring parking lot on Central and 10th. "The design wasn't suitable" and it would cause congestion. Really? I have lived in Medford my entire life. Both Ashland and Grants Pass have nice downtowns compared to us. A little congestion means that there is something going on. Our downtown needs to come alive again. Lisa Watson Medford Reduce Internet prices For many seniors, the only contact with the outside world is the Internet. They can order food and prescriptions delivered, etc. The cost of Internet service has gone up too much to be affordable. There should be cheaper plans and senior discounts. Make the Internet a utility and control the price. Something needs to be done. Ronald Hendel Rogue River Battery disposal needed We are encouraged to recycle, conserve, improve air quality, send less to landfills. Seattle fines people not making every effort to compost everything possible. Apparently, this doesn't include keeping dead batteries (AA, AAA, C, D) out of landfills. They either go to the landfill or we spend $2  pound to dispose of them. We have a new recycling center for beverage containers, grocery stores have drop-off containers for plastic grocery bags, but we have to pay to dispose of batteries or to the landfill they go! We need an alternative disposal system. Geri Drivon Medford New track a plus Recently SOU hosted three days of track and field on their new track and football field. On Tuesday Ashland High School was permitted to host Eagle Point, and on Friday and Saturday SOU hosted the championships of the 10-school Cascade Collegiate Conference. All three days were a success. The college track meet was well attended and was appreciated by many Rogue Valley track fans who until this spring had not been able to see a multi-school collegiate track meet locally for over a decade. The high school track meet let the kids know what they were missing with their outdated facility. Hosting events such as the high school track meet and the conference championships serves to involve the community, which results in in greater local financial support for SOU. Thus, the more events brought to SOU the better. Brent Thompson Ashland Parents should learn I read the Medford Tribune daily and especially enjoy the letters to the editor section and most of the time find people responding to issues as I would, but have yet to read any responses to the article on parents and the need for more bilingual teachers. I almost thought it was a satire in that parents who did not speak English and needed an interpreter were complaining about there not being enough bilingual teachers in the Medford School District. I am a senior citizen and know my values are different then the current ones, but shouldn't a parent be speaking the language they want their child to learn? The schools now provide food, medical care and dental care as well as an education with the option of bilingual classes, and if in the home environment English is not spoken, good luck! What's the parents responsibility? The parent needs to learn English! This is the language of the United States, which I assume is why they are here. The school system seems to be now given the responsibility of providing all of a child's needs. Why do we need the parent?
