COLLEGE FOOTBALL A 'miracle' needed for injured Allen to play Comment By Ryan Thorburn and Steve Mims MailTribune.com By Ryan Thorburn and Steve Mims Posted Jan. 7, 2015 @ 6:47 pm By Ryan Thorburn and Steve Mims Posted Jan. 7, 2015 @ 6:47 pm » Social News EUGENE — Devon Allen may have found a hurdle he can’t clear. Oregon’s dynamic redshirt freshman wide receiver and TrackTown star said after Tuesday’s practice that it’s unrealistic to think he’ll be suiting up for the Ducks’ national championship game against Ohio State on Monday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas (5:30 p.m., ESPN). Allen is the latest starter to suffer a leg injury after going down returning the opening kickoff of the Rose Bowl. “Probably not,” Allen said when asked if he will be able to play. “We’ll see, maybe a miracle or something.” Although Allen is getting around on crutches like All-American cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu and all-Pac-12 first-team tight end Pharaoh Brown, he said his injury is not as severe. “Those guys are a lot worse off than me. You can compare it that way, but those guys have some really, really bad injuries,” Allen said. “It’s kind of how our season has been. We’ve got a lot of guys that can step up and play. You saw that last week.” Darren Carrington had seven receptions for 165 yards and two touchdowns during Oregon’s 59-20 victory over Florida State in the national semifinals. Keanon Lowe “dominated” the game without officially touching the ball, according to coach Mark Helfrich. “I don’t think you can replace a Devon Allen, he’s a future Olympian,” Lowe said. “He is a great player, another guy that came a long way this year, especially in the blocking game. He is one of the toughest guys on this team.” Allen, who won the NCAA and USA Outdoor championships in the 110-meter hurdles, hopes to be back on the track at some point in the spring and summer. The NCAA 2015 NCAA championships are June 10-13 at Hayward Field. “With track it’s a little bit different. You’re not really cutting and doing a lot of stuff. We’ll see how my rehab goes,” Allen said. “I’ve got five and a half months until the outdoor national championships, we’ll see.” Mattingly in the middle Oregon redshirt freshman linebacker Danny Mattingly continued his strong play late in the season off the bench with three tackles in the Rose Bowl. He has three tackles in each of the past three games and had a career-high four tackles against California. The 6-foot-5, 250-pound inside linebacker missed four games early in the season due to injury. “My season started off a little slow, but as the season progressed, I’ve improved as far as getting off blocks and getting to the ball,” he said. Mattingly, who has 17 tackles on the season, is listed behind junior Rodney Hardrick on the depth chart. “Danny is a great guy, very smart and talented,” Hardrick said. “He just needs to learn a little more and play a little faster and he will be all right.” Notable According to Oregon, four members of the 2015 recruiting class — running back Taj Griffin of Powder Springs, Ga., defensive lineman Canton Kaumatule of Honolulu, wide receiver Alex Ofodile of Columbia, Mo., and offensive lineman Zach Okun of Newbury Park, Calif. — have enrolled at UO early for the winter term. The program has 14 other verbal commitments, and the class is currently ranked 19th nationally by 247Sports. Quotable “They are really talented, really athletic, and sound on defense. It’s game 15 and we’re playing another really good team, so we have our work cut out for us.” — Oregon offensive coordinator Scott Frost on Ohio State.
