Mail Tribune / Jim Craven More than 100 rally for troops While peace activists demonstrated in Ashland and Medford, supporters of the war in Iraq waved flags and cheered in Vogel Plaza Thursday for America’s troops. More than 100 people showed up for the weekly "people in white" demonstration on the second day of the war. Many of the participants said they don’t support war per se, but they do support the troops and the cause of freedom. "I don’t know of any sane person who would be happy with the war, but we need to support our troops," said Judy LaNier of Talent. "We are out here supporting our freedom and the people who fight for our freedom." Cathy Holt of Central Point said, "I’m sorry to see we’re at this point, but I support our nation’s decision." Holt, whose son, Travis W. Holt, is in the U.S. Coast Guard and could end up in the Middle East, said the prospect of potential American casualties is particularly worrisome. "How would any mom feel," she said. "I just hope it (the war) is over soon." Kacy Clark of Medford said, "We support our president and our troops." Clark has a cousin, Tavis McNair of Medford, who is in the Marines and just crossed the Kuwaiti border Thursday as American troops moved into Iraq. A friend of Clark’s, Dyan Lane of Medford, said the prospect of casualties in the war is also worrisome to her. "That’s the only drawback to war is death," she said. Both Southern Oregon University students, Clark and Lane say their support of the war effort is not shared by many of their more liberal classmates. "It makes your faith stronger," said Clark.
