The Beavers lost their fourth straight game on Saturday, 39-32 to a Washington State team that came to Corvallis with two wins, one in the Pac-12 Conference. OSU is now last in the North Division at 1-5, 4-5 overall. Three out of the four losses were relatively close games and the Beavers had chances to win all three if they had come through with better play late in the games. Against the Cougars, the Beavers held the lead at the start of the fourth but allowed two WSU touchdown drives. The Beavers did finally put together a big scoring drive of their own, but then failed to get the ball back. “There’s no magic formula to it. When you’re losing close games, you’ve got to make a few more plays to get yourself a chance to win a game,” coach Mike Riley said. “If we get one turnover on defense in some fashion, some way and then we get the ball in better field position and we score and win the game. But we didn’t and they made those plays.” The Beavers will be hard-pressed to get to six wins. On paper, their best chance was to get home wins against California and WSU. Instead, the slide grew. “When you’re in situation like ours, you’re going to be defined by your close games. When it comes down to the end of the year, you need to win the close games to have a good year,” Riley said. “I remember when Matt Moore was playing that one year, it was like seven of our games were like this and we won them. That’s a difference. This team, we’ve got to help as coaches to continue to gain confidence so we can finish better.” The Beavers have struggled at times on offense, primarily due to a banged up offensive line. Third-down conversions and getting the ball into the end zone have been trouble areas. The line has started to play better and quarterback Sean Mannion has developed a connection with Jordan Villamin in the passing game. Victor Bolden has also been playing at a high level. The defense has been an enigma in recent weeks. After a strong start to the season, the Beavers have played poorly on that side of the ball. “We’ve got a lot of seniors on defense that are probably shell-shocked a little bit because of what’s happened,” Riley said. “They’ve made a lot of good plays for our teams through the years so nobody’s going to doubt how much they have invested in this thing. We’ve just got to help the rest of this group grow.” Riley said the coaches have to continue to work with the players to get them back on track, beginning with this Saturday’s 7:45 p.m. game at home against Arizona State. “There’s no doubt there’s a big role confidence plays in winning games late. So we haven’t done it. So what are we going to do about it? We’ve just got to help these players develop confidence by coaching, giving them as solid a plan as we can so we can give them a chance to be better when it comes down to crunch time,” Riley said. “All the games are going to be hard. We’ve got three more hard ones looming ahead of us. But that’s OK.
