With each major mass murder, more guns are bought. Assault weapons with 30-bullet capacity magazines seem to be the weapon of choice for mass murderers. I suggest we limit all rifles and assault weapons to a five-shot magazine. It would be a felony for anyone except law enforcement to possess a rifle magazine with more than a five-shot capacity; with one bullet in chamber, that would make six. Handguns with more than a six-shot capacity would require a special license and extensive background check. There has been enough murder. Hugging your kids and and giving them a kiss as they go off to school and wondering if they will be alive at the end of the day is something that we can no longer tolerate. The NRA will not be happy until we revert to the "Old West" days of every man — and now woman — having to strap on a gun before heading outside their home. It's time we stand up to the NRA and stop the holocaust. Mike E. Miles Medford Thanks for drug program I am writing this letter to express my appreciation and gratitude to Deputy Walker. She is a deputy at the Jackson County Jail. Fifteen-plus years ago she started looking for answers to help our drug- and alcohol-addicted community. She kept seeing the young folks come in and out of the jail like a revolving door. As the addiction cycle continues, those little children who would come in to visit their mothers are now the ones in jail. Through Deputy Walker's dedication and noble fight, our community now has a successful drug and alcohol treatment program in the jail. Chris, the counselor for females, teaches intensive cognitive restructuring and in-depth drug and alcohol relapse prevention skills. Offenders who participate learn pro-social skills to help them transition back into society. Because of her approach and style of instruction, Chris is admired for her compassion and devotion. Thank you, Deputy Walker and Chris, for your many gifts and depth of integrity, and for being that special kind of person who cares enough to take time to see the needs of our community. Tommie Dewett Gold Hill More guns aren't the answer Mass shootings are the tip of the iceberg of gun violence. It's credible that guns in the hands of the right people could prevent some deaths in these horrendous public displays. However, more guns are not the answer to the overall problem. The congressional ban on federal funding of gun violence research has blocked the Centers for Disease Control from conducting any such studies. However, others have shown that for every 1 percent increase in the frequency of gun ownership, there is an approximately equal increase in the frequency of shooting deaths, and these are likely to be by accident, intentionally self-inflicted or by a close acquaintance. It really is a public health issue. When there's a virus (or a gun) around, you are more likely to get sick (or shot). Now that there are as many guns in the U.S. as people, there are no obvious solutions. It's become too easy for anyone to obtain a gun regardless of regulations or their motivations. Nonetheless, it is clear that even more guns solve nothing but the arms industry's need for continued sales of an almost infinitely durable product. It's no mystery why it supports the NRA and other gun-rights lobbyists.
