Indoor and outdoor venues showcased 80 bands playing a wide variety of music to appreciative audiences, and works by a dozen visual artists were displayed in multiple locations. The event appeared to run smoothly for the most part, with enthusiastic patrons strolling through downtown Medford despite unseasonably warm temperatures. If there was one drawback to an otherwise successful event, it was the lack of shade at the outdoor stages. Certainly organizers couldn't have anticipated a 100-degree day on Sept. 20, but more shade is a must if the event repeats next year. Jeers — to Gov. John Kitzhaber and his campaign staff, who ignored repeated requests from a Mail Tribune reporter for an interview to add balance to Sunday's feature story on state Rep. Dennis Richardson, who is challenging Kitzhaber's quest for a fourth term. If the governor wants to communicate the message that the votes of Southern Oregonians don't matter to him, that's a very effective way to do it. Richardson is a long shot against the three-term governor, and has moved to Portland to woo voters in the metro area. Kitzhaber and his staff managed to reinforce the perception that state government operates for the benefit of Portland and its residents at the expense of the rest of the state. Cheers — to Mike and Laura Naumes, selected as First Citizens by The Chamber of Medford/Jackson County in recognition of their years of service to the community. The Naumeses are the second couple to be honored; Sherm and Wanda Olsrud shared the award in 2000. Both have spent years serving on boards and commissions, including the Oregon State University Board of Trustees and the Federal Reserve Bank (Laura) and the St. Mary's Community Foundation and St. Mary's School Board (Mike). Together, the couple — who run a multi-state fruit growing operation — founded Donate Fruit Cause, which provides millions of pounds of fruit to needy people. Cheers — to Clint Rodreick of Phoenix High School, named Oregon's History Teacher of the Year. The award puts him in contention for national recognition when the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History selects a national teacher of the year. Rodreick was selected in part for his use of original source materials to bring history alive for his students. An example is a unit on the Salem witch trials he conducted for his Advanced Placement history students using narratives of the trials written by two people directly involved. Hats off to Rodreick and his innovation in the classroom.
