Almyra Walter, lovingly known as Marge was born December 8, 1920, in Richland to John and Lurana Hall Gray. She attended schools in Baker County and at Hermiston, then high school at Gem State Academy, a Seventh-day Adventist boarding school in Caldwell Idaho. Marge met and married Ed Walter in 1957 in California. They had met through a mutual friend in Central Point. She worked for a canteen service for a time in White City. They lived in the Rogue Valley and then moved to McKenzie Bridge for a few years. She and Ed returned to Baker in 1993. Ed passed away December 24, 1995, and Marge remained in Baker for 16 years after Ed's death. She had a loving church family and many community friends whom she stayed with, until her health declined and she she needed family to care for her. It was then Marge moved to Pasco, spending these past four years living with her daughter, Janet. Marge enjoyed cooking. camping and grange projects. She enjoyed each season of the year, because it was always different. Marge was very generous and always compassionate to all; especially people in need. She always had an extra potato to put in the pot for dinner when company came by. Marge was very family oriented, never missed a birthday, anniversary, or other holiday without a card, call, visit, or a carefully selected gift. She corresponded with dozens of friends she made over the years and enjoyed receiving mail back from them. She loved bird watching, even collecting feathers for the church youth group study project. Marge liked to sew and loved to remember "I made Bonnie's baby clothes" (her youngest sibling). She embroidered handkerchiefs, pillowcases, and even patches with names, dates, etc. for family quilts. She enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles and was very good at finding the next piece. She nurtured dozens of plants including a huge Christmas cactus. Marge was an avid reader. She had several hundred books in her personal library and studied her Bible daily. She loved animals and had several dachshunds, one at a time , over the years, In cold weather they sported winter coats and went on car rides with her. They slept on the foot of her bed or in her chair with her when she was napping. Marge loved collecting things. She had a nice collection of black glass she displayed. She collected stamps, buttons, and numerous other things for her personal enjoyment. Above all she will be remembered for being a very kind, loving person and will be missed very much by her family and all who had the pleasure to have known her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed; all four of her siblings, and one half-sister; her parents; and two grandchildren. Survivors include her daughters, Janet Richards of Pasco, Wash., Cindy Headley of Central Point, Yvonne (Bill) Wilson of Trail, and Sandy (Jerry) Stowell of Central Point; her son, Bill Walters of Central Point; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews.
