The president will send fawning greetings to the Cuban rulers. Our Secretary of State, John F. Kerry, will be strutting around in sartorial splendor. Perhaps the Castro brothers, who have made about $8 billion off the backs of the enslaved and impoverished Cuban people, will appear. Some, however, will be conspicuously absent from the gala event. Those are the 100 or so people recently rounded up by the longest functioning Communist regime in the world. These Cubans committed the unspeakable crime of expressing thoughts not considered proper by the current tyrants of Cuba and so are detained. Our country could have pointed out the evil rot that is Cuba's human rights persecution, but it kept silent. That silence will be seen as our approval of Cuba's criminal empire. This was an opportunity that the administration deliberately squandered in its silly and foolish pursuit of toadying to tyrants. Common sense and experience, both absent from this administration, would have informed them that such toadying will only embolden totalitarians. Sure enough, now Fidel is claiming he is owed money for damages the embargo caused. Communist chutzpah! Dennis Sinclair Medford Thanks for tickets On behalf of the foster children and families of Jackson County, I would like to once again thank those in the community for their generous donation of tickets for the Aug. 13 performance of "Peter Pan" at Collier Center for Performing Arts. Craterian Performances Company along with the Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation made tickets available to Jackson County foster families for a wonderful evening of fun and music. This evening was a much welcomed respite and treat for both adults and children alike. The thoughtfulness to offer them to our foster families was an inspiration to me and an encouragement to all of us that this community does care about its children. Penny Esser, DHS/Child Welfare Medford Please explain I recently had the opportunity to review the speech Sen. Jeff Merkley gave in November of last year during the debate on the Keystone XL Pipeline. The views expressed by our senator gave me pride as an Oregonian. Merkley spoke of the danger to the environment and the impact on climate change that would result from Keystone XL, the injustice of a foreign company taking the land of Americans for private interest and private gain, as well as the failure of the project to generate safe and sustainable jobs. He spoke for over 15 minutes, accompanied by charts and data. His performance then makes his continued support of the Jordan Cove LNG pipeline a bewildering and disappointing paradox. Every point that he made then, and since, in opposition to the Keystone XL, can also be made with regard to the LNG pipeline. Stand Up For Oregon! No Pipeline, No LNG i​s the new name for the campaign to stop this threat to us all. Why would our senator not consider protecting the homes and way of life of fellow Oregonians as important as Keystone and Stand Up for Oregon ​as well? Please explain, Senator Merkley. Mark A.
