Sonia Jayne Nicholson Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 13, 2016 at 2:00 AM Posted May. 13, 2016 at 2:00 AM » Social News Sonia Nicholson passed away April 16, 2016 in Grants Pass, Ore. She was born April 1, 1965 to Keith and Louise Nicholson in Elgin, Ill. Sonia graduated from Hidden Valley High School in 1983, going on to become a Staff Sergeant (E-6) in the Oregon Army National Guard for 18 years. She was also coordinator and coach for the Guard’s Biathlon Team. She traveled worldwide for Biathlon sports and competed in the Olympic Trials in 1994 and 1998. She made the U.S. World Military Champion team (CISM) in 1993 and 1999. Sonia also won numerous awards for marathons and the Pole-Paddle-Relay in Bend, Ore. Sonia loved horses and endurance riding, hiking local trails, gardening, and was a great cook, especially known for her “awesome pies.” She loved Reggae music and was a “True Indubian.” Her life was a health-oriented and spiritual quest and her love for others touched many hearts. She will be greatly missed. Sonia is survived by her son, Jeremiah Stranger of Milwaukie, Ore.; two daughters, Siera Rosser of Casper, Wyo. and Atria Wisehart of Applegate, Ore.; her parents, Louise Nicholson of Applegate and Keith Nicholson of Grants Pass; two brothers, KJ Nicholson and Damien Racataian, both of Applegate; sister, Janelle Nicholson of Grants Pass; and many close, extended family members in Portland, Ore. She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Margaret Lifto. A memorial service and Grayback Hike is being planned in her honor at a later date.
