Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend December 24, 2005 Danny Stebbins Wells Fargo suspect left hospital ID at the bank By MEG LANDERS Mail Tribune An Ashland man faces charges of robbing a Wells Fargo Bank in Medford Thursday after police found his hospital identification bracelet at the scene. The bracelet bore the name of Danny David Stebbins, 40, who was captured early Friday morning by the California Highway Patrol after he crashed a stolen 1998 Plymouth van on Highway 199 near Gasquet and tried to elude police on foot. He was lodged in the Del Norte County Jail in Crescent City on charges of driving under the influence, possession of a stolen motor vehicle and hit and run. Medford police Lt. Tim George said Stebbins will be charged in the robbery of the Wells Fargo branch, located in the Safeway at the Medford Center. He eventually will be extradited to Jackson County to face the charges. Advertisement Police said Stebbins approached a teller and handed her a note demanding money at about 6 p.m. Thursday. He was seen leaving the store on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said. "He had been at the hospital and had a hospital ID band," George said. "He dropped it at the teller window and it was on the floor." George declined further comment on information on the bracelet, such as the name of the hospital. He also declined to say how much money was stolen, but did say "the lion’s share" was recovered. Medford police said they received a report from CHP in Crescent City at about 1 a.m. Friday that officers had recovered the Plymouth van, reported stolen from the Medford Center on Dec. 18. They also reported they had Stebbins in custody. Local officers and FBI agents spent Friday afternoon in Crescent City assisting in the investigation. Stebbins recently served time in Jackson County Jail after convictions of burglary and domestic assault, according to Circuit Court records. He listed his address as the 600 block of Park Street in Ashland. The hospital bracelet was a lucky break, said George. "Even the police get a Christmas present once in a while, and that’s ours right there," he said.
