North Valley Silences Hidden Valley MERLIN � North Valley proved its defense was for real Friday night at Knights Stadium. Undefeated North Valley limited Skyline Conference rival Hidden Valley to 89 total yards and posted a 19-3 victory in the 21st meeting between the two schools. North Valley, which is tied for eighth in the Class 3A state rankings, upped its record to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the Skyline, while Hidden Valley fell to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in conference. North Valley has only surrendered 35 points all year. Hidden Valley�s Tim VanderStoel was a marked man. The senior running back, who has averaged 149 yards in the Mustangs� six previous games, was held to 17 yards on 13 carries. "Our defense was phenomenal tonight," North Valley coach John George said. "Our front seven rose to the occasion." The teams played to a scoreless first quarter, but the Knights broke through with two touchdowns in the final 6� minutes of the opening half. Colin Beard scored his 12th touchdown of the season on a 2-yard run to cap a 13-play drive with 6:33 to go in the second period. Cole Parmelee had been North Valley�s big receiver most of the season. But the Knights sprung Derek Wright on the Mustangs. Wright hauled in a 25-yard scoring pass from quarterback Tim Cunha with 3:50 left in the second quarter to give the Knights a 13-0 lead. Wright had four receptions for 105 yards in the contest. "Derek Wright stepped up for us," said George. "He made some key catches." After VanderStoel booted a 37-yard field goal to cut the Knights� margin to 13-3 with 9:04 remaining in the third quarter, Parmelee closed out the scoring with a 1-yard TD catch from Cunha with less than one minute left in the quarter. North Valley gained 386 yards in offense, evenly divided between the run and pass. Beard led the ground attack with 135 yards on 25 rushes. Three North Valley turnovers � two interceptions and a lost fumble at the Mustangs� 1 � stymied the Knights� offense. "We just made a few miscues," said George, "but we were pleased with our balance. Our offense has enough weapons that we knew we would get untracked." The Knights host Rogue River next week, then have a key road matchup with Henley (4-2, 3-0 Skyline) in two weeks that will probably determine the Skyline Conference title. PHOENIX 36, ILLINOIS VALLEY 9 � At Phoenix, Eric Kessler ran for a season-best 187 yards on 24 carries to lead Phoenix to the Skyline Conference win. Ross Ellis finished with 128 yards through the air on 8-of-14 passing but was picked off twice. Jimi Lockhed added 62 yards on the ground on 12 carries. Floron McGee snagged four passes from Ellis for 92 yards as the Pirates (3-3, 2-1 Skyline) gained more than 400 total yards for the fourth time this season. Illinois Valley sophomore quarterback Michael Pagnotta was 8-of-14 passing for 117 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. Pagnotta connected with Travis Pickern for a 10-yard TD pass in the third quarter. The Cougars received another fine ground effort from senior tailback David Crocker, who picked up 92 yards on 21 carries. Grohs caught touchdown passes of 40 and 50 yards from Frank Gauntz. Cunningham carried only eight times but had 111 yards and scoring runs of 52 and 47 yards. Matt Frederick of Rogue River threw touchdown passes of 5 yards to Matt Branch and 30 yards to Justin Sharm, and Fred Perryman kicked field goals of 37 and 35 yards. Cascade Christian had the first possession in overtime. The Challengers ran seven plays, but turned the ball over on downs on a failed fourth-down attempt. Noble scored on a second-down play that was the sixth play of the Antlers� overtime drive. Bonanza (3-2, 1-0 SCL) rallied to tie the game in the fourth quarter on Sean Wells� 1-yard TD run and a 2-point conversion run by Riley Spivey. The Challengers (2-4, 0-1 SCL) scored all their points in the second quarter to take a 14-6 halftime lead. Mychal Sha, who led the Challengers with 80 yards on the ground, opened the scoring on a 3-yard run. Sha made both PAT kicks. After Buddy Kness broke a 49-yard touchdown run for Bonanza to cut the Challengers� lead to 7-6, quarterback Jon Gettman scored on a 10-yard run for Cascade. Gettman was 8-of-14 passing for 101 yards. Zach Mellow was the Challengers� leading receiver with three catches for 56 yards. Cascade totaled 284 yards in offense, while Bonanza registered 235 yards. Butte Falls (4-1 overall, 3-1 Skyline A North League) used a 70-yard punt return by junior Isaac Stephenson and a 45-yard run by senior quarterback Nick Rodgers to take a 12-8 lead in the second quarter. Defensive tackle David Hoel tipped an Elkton pass to himself later in the second and rumbled 20 yards � the second straight year Hoel returned an interception for a score against the Elks. Rodgers� conversion run made it 20-8 at the half. Senior running back Tommy Lunsford added a 20-yard TD jaunt in the fourth quarter and tacked on the two-point run. Lunsford led the Loggers with 87 yards on 16 carries. Butte Falls gained 325 yards in total offense to Elkton�s 103. Stephenson, a 5-foot-3, 135-pound cornerback, made two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. The Elks fell to 4-2 overall.
