Dennis Murphy insists it was just that. No matter how good it might be, Enterprise High of Redding, Calif., was no match for South Medford in the first round of the Red Bluff Holiday Classic boys basketball tournament. The Panthers recovered from an early 7-2 hole to demolish Enterprise, 87-54. South (5-0) has won its games by an average of 31.2 points. Advertisement Featuring a 6-foot guard, Carlos DeSoto, headed to Santa Clara and a 6-9 center, Jeremiah Batdorf, who will play at California-Davis, Enterprise appeared to be the Panthers’ first real challenge. Appearances can be deceiving. "Our depth, I think, tired them out," said Murphy, South’s 16th-year head coach. "When you’re playing as many kids as we play, and they all can score and play good defense, it’s tough to stop." Senior post Craig Johnson dominated Batdorf in scoring 25 points and gobbling 12 rebounds. "He was just unstoppable," Murphy said. "It was just a great effort on his part." Senior point guard Ryan Fiegi shrugged off illness to amass 16 points, seven assists and five boards. Freshman post Kyle Singler produced 12 points and 11 rebounds, and junior point guard Isaiah Adams came off the bench for 12 points. For Enterprise, Chris Rosenau had 13 points, DeSoto 12 and Batdorf scored all seven of his in the first quarter. The Panthers face Pleasant Valley of Chico, Calif., in the semifinals at 5:30 tonight.
