COMMENTARY Cowboys' latest moves point to Peterson Comment By Tim Cowlishaw The Dallas Morning News MailTribune.com By Tim Cowlishaw The Dallas Morning News Posted Apr. 2, 2015 at 8:29 PM By Tim Cowlishaw The Dallas Morning News Posted Apr. 2, 2015 at 8:29 PM » Social News If the Cowboys got to 12-4 and a playoff victory with a “Take Your Time and Build” attitude last year, the theme for 2015 is something entirely different. “Go For Broke. Now.” A series of moves, highlighted by Tony Romo restructuring his contract to save $12.8 million in cap room for 2015, suggests one thing and one thing only. Adrian Peterson, come on down. Before Romo reduced what had been the NFL’s biggest salary cap hit, the club made the important move of getting middle linebacker Rolando McClain back into the fold Wednesday. After losing Bruce Carter to Tampa Bay and Justin Durant to Atlanta, the linebacker situation was thinning out. But the one-year deal McClain agreed to Wednesday indicates the team remains troubled by his shaky past. The one-year contract that defensive end Greg Hardy signed two weeks ago is clearly nothing more than a short-term rental … especially since he is almost certain to be suspended and the team agreed not to “franchise” him following the 2015 season. The crowning blow was the Romo restructuring. It makes the pursuit of Peterson all the more interesting. And potentially dangerous. Now if they actually land him, the loss of DeMarco Murray goes away and the team moves to the top of the heap alongside Seattle and Green Bay as favorites in the NFC. Even if the Cowboys are agreeable to dealing with Peterson’s current contract, one that makes him the league’s highest paid back by a wide margin, they certainly might not fulfill all three years on the deal. So again Peterson would go to Dallas as something of a rental. Is going for so many home runs at once — Hardy, McClain and the big one, Peterson — a terrible idea? Not necessarily because it’s good in any professional sport to have key players performing in their contract years. For more information, see the 2014 stats of Murray and Dez Bryant. But when you’re pushing that much money into the future for Romo, it’s obvious the team is thinking about 2015 and 2015 only. And when you reach the point of having a locker room filled with premier players — two of the big ones coming in from other teams — all playing under those conditions (remember that, for now, Dez is franchised on a one-year deal), the chemistry has a chance to be explosive. It goes beyond the national criticism the Cowboys would receive for apparently opening the doors (and Jerry Jones’ checkbook) for anyone on the commissioner’s suspended list. Hardy knows if he produces, he’s set to hit the open market again where there would almost certainly be more suitors after the Cowboys took the hit for signing him a year removed from his domestic violence charge. Bryant wants the ball under any circumstances, but if he remains unable to land a long-term deal by July, he wants it more than ever for that next contract. Then you would have Peterson, knowing that if he doesn’t get his carries and his yards to rival what Murray accomplished last fall, he could be viewed as expendable. Beyond that, no one knows if this is really a 50-50 proposition or if Peterson landing in Dallas is no more than Jones’ fantasy football dream. If the Cowboys are giving the Vikings indications they would be willing to take Peterson under the current contract terms, then we know they are deadly serious about making this happen. At that point, it becomes an internal battle for the Vikings with Mike Zimmer, the longtime Dallas coordinator trying to succeed in his long-awaited head coaching opportunity, wanting to keep his best player while management tries to move beyond last year’s ugliness in Minnesota. Peterson will not bring a Herschel Walker-like bounty of picks from Dallas or any other team. He may not even bring a first-round pick. If that’s the case, do the Vikings decide they are better off living with a player who doesn’t really want to be there even while making close to $15 million a year? Much of this is simply Minnesota’s problem. But it becomes a Cowboys issue if the club really didn’t pursue retaining Murray because it was holding out hope of hitting a home run with Peterson. This is one case where connecting could lead to, who knows, the first NFC championship game at home in 22 years? Is that realistic? Perhaps. A swing and a miss leaves them with Darren McFadden and Joseph Randle and the need to use a high draft pick on another piece of the running back puzzle in an offseason where the Cowboys are now going for broke.
