Eagle Point falls to Mountain View EAGLE POINT � It was a good news-bad news night for Eagle Point Friday in its non-conference game against Mountain View. The good: The Eagles dominated statistically against one of last year�s state semifinalist and a team that earlier this year was a top-10 member. The bad: The Eagles lost, 21-14. "It�s kind of frustrating," said Eagle Point coach Mike Johnston. "We really controlled the game most of the time. We outgained them on the ground, we outgained them in the air, we had more first downs." The Eagles outgained the Cougars 336-222 and had twice as many first downs, 14-7. What they didn�t do was contain B.J. Bartenstein and capitalize on two chances in the final three minutes to put the tying or winning points on the board. Bartenstein broke free for a 29-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, then deflated the Eagles with a kickoff return for a touchdown after they took a second-quarter lead. The runback covered 82 yards and made it 14-14 at halftime. Mountain View scored the only points of the second half on a 51-yard pass from Curt Plants to Matt Kline in the third quarter. "We were aware of him (Bartenstein)," said Johnston, who had seen film of the speedy back scoring on all manner of plays. "He just did a good job." Eagle Point�s defense did well also, forcing three turnovers in the fourth quarter � a Sam Dodenhoff interception and fumble recoveries by Blake Cam and Jake Phillips. Two of the turnovers came in the last three minutes and set Eagle Point up at about the Cougar 30. Ensuing drives reached the 6- and 15-yard lines before ending in interceptions in the end zone. "It was a game we probably should have won," said Johnston. "It�s encouraging to play well against that caliber of team, but it�s also kind of tough to know you should have beaten that team. "We couldn�t quite cash in on the opportunities we had." Eagle Point got a 3-yard touchdown run from Victor Shelton and a 69-yard scoring strike from Kyle Gray to Greg Horn in the first half. Shelton ran 27 times for 151 yards and Horn caught four passes for 115 yards. SHELDON 34, CRATER 14 � At Eugene, the Irish blocked two straight punts and knocked out Crater quarterback P.J. Price for the season in a rough non-conference loss for the Comets. Trailing 20-7 to start the third quarter, Crater�s opening drive of the second half stalled when Price was hit on his knee after attempting a pass and he was unable to return. Before being injured, Price hooked up with David Sills for a 77-yard touchdown to tie the game at 7-all in the first quarter. Price finished 6 of 14 for 113 yards, while backup quarterback Derek Peterson went 2-for-6 for 55 yards and one interception. Price�s injury also hampered the Comets� special teams effort since Price doubles as the starting punter. Facing his first game-time action as punter, sophomore Scott Malone had his first two punts blocked and returned deep into Crater territory to set up two Sheldon touchdowns. The Comets answered in the fourth quarter with a 7-yard TD run by Dan Casey and a Malone PAT. Sheldon�s Brent Andrews rushed 17 times for 102 yards and two touchdowns, while Alex Brink completed 11 of 14 passes for 153 yards and two TDs to pace the Irish. ROSEBURG 47, KLAMATH UNION 8 � At Roseburg, junior Rod Cope scored three touchdowns and rushed for 227 yards as Roseburg remained undefeated in the Southern Oregon Conference. The Indians (2-1, 2-0 SOC) led 13-8 at halftime, then steamrolled Klamath Union in the second half with a bruising ground attack. Roseburg rushed 37 times for over 300 yards in the second half. Klamath�s only score came on Jeff Mortenson�s 31-yard interception return in the second quarter. The Indians didn�t attempt a pass in the second half after senior quarterback Scott Bone replaced Adam Hazel.
