Phoenix took advantage of a big second period and cruised to a 50-32 victory over the Mustangs — clinching a tie for the conference championship. The Pirates (12-10, 10-2 Skyline) share the Skyline title with Illinois Valley, which defeated Mazama 66-39 in its final regular-season game. Illinois Valley received the Skyline No. 1 seed in the state playoffs, while Phoenix is No. 2. The Pirates will host a Class 3A state playoff game March 2 against the No. 3 team from the Sky Em league. Hidden Valley (9-15, 6-6) tied with North Valley and Henley for third in the Skyline. The Mustangs were awarded a bye through a tiebreaker in a conference playoff format. Henley will play at North Valley on Thursday, with the winner facing the Mustangs on Saturday for a state berth. "Phoenix picked up their defense and our girls settled for jump shots and did too much standing around," Hidden Valley coach Mike Schaefer said. "Phoenix did a good job bringing the pressure. They took advantage of the mistakes we made." Senior post Jaclyn Unruh sparked Phoenix with a game-high 18 points and 10 rebounds. Unruh was 7-of-9 from the field. "(Unruh) gets good position when you dump it inside," Phoenix coach Kyle Walker said. "She was making almost everything she caught and also had a few points off rebounds." Pirate point guards Alex Hanscom and Ashley McCarty played key roles in the victory. Hanscom added 11 points and McCarty handed out seven assists to go with nine points. "McCarty and Hanscom traded off point guard duties and both did a good job handling and distributing the ball," said Walker. Sophomore Bailey Southern and freshman Laura Silva combined for 23 points to pace the Mustangs. Karlie Matson pulled down seven rebounds and Rachel Richardson had six rebounds and three steals for the Mustangs. "We had an offensive lull in the second quarter and you can’t have that in a tight game," said Schaefer. "They didn’t have a bad quarter and we did."
