Search Menu Login Reset Password Home Weather Archive Sign Up for Alerts Full Site Close Menu DeBoer SENATE VACANCY Alan DeBoer to seek GOP nomination for Bates' seat August 20, 2016 - 11:30 AM Former Ashland mayor Alan DeBoer will seek the Republican nomination for the state Senate seat left vacant by the death of Alan Bates. Dave Dotterrer, who ran twice against Bates and had been considering another run, decided not to put his name forward. Jackson County Republican Party Chairman Ken Fawcett confirmed Saturday that DeBoer is seeking the nomination. DeBoer could not be reached for comment. Dotterrer, a retired Marine Corps officer who worked for Rep. Dennis Richardson, said Saturday that after running twice, it was time for someone else to have a chance. Also, Dotterrer said, he has made commitments to various boards and organizations that he feels obligated to fulfill. Jackson County Republicans will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23 at the Inn at the Commons to choose a nominee for the Senate District 3 seat. The meeting will be open to the public. DeBoer is the nominee for the House District 5 seat now held by Peter Buckley, who is not seeking re-election. If DeBoer is nominated in the Senate race, the party will need to find another nominee to run against Democratic nominee Pam Marsh for Buckley's seat. Fawcett said Saturday that if DeBoer is the Senate nominee, the party likely will hold a second convention to select a House nominee. Fawcett said DeBoer is the only candidate to express interest in the Senate race at this point, but it's possible others could step forward before Tuesday. DeBoer, 65, longtime owner of Town and Country Chevrolet, is a lifelong resident of Ashland. He spent four years as mayor and two years on the City Council. He has been active in several community organizations, including the Mt.
