The National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center said there's a solid chance the region will see "wetter than normal" weather for the month. Medford's average for the month is 1.7 inches, based on records stretching back to 1912. "We could even get that much in the first half of the month," said meteorologist Ryan Sandler. "Basically the whole West Coast should be wetter than normal for the month, especially California and the southwest Oregon coast." The average monthly rain total for February in Medford is 2.03 inches, meteorologists said, and just over half that amount fell. But the two months before that were sopping wet. December saw 7.73 inches — more than double the 3.24-inch average — and January saw 4.22 inches, about an inch and a half more than the 2.71-inch average. The rain is expected to start falling Friday night, and it should last through the weekend. "We've got a few good systems coming through, and that should start us off on pretty good footing," said meteorologist Charles Smith. Though wet, Friday's system is forecast to be warm, with high temperatures in the high 50s to low 60s through the weekend. Snow levels are not known yet, though forecasters expect the elevation to be quite high. Another rainy system is expected to follow next Thursday, though that won't be as strong, weather officials said. The March moisture will be especially welcome in Southern California, Sandler said, where El Nino, which was expected to have a sizable impact, hasn't really delivered. Most of the storms generated by the phenomenon were seen in the middle of the Pacific or north toward Alaska. "There was definitely a lot of stuff going on with the El Nino, but the eastern part of the Pacific has not shown the signal we would expect," Sandler said. "Maybe (in) March it will."
