PREP SOFTBALL/BASEBALL GP edges South in battle of unbeatens Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Apr. 8, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted Apr. 8, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News GRANTS PASS — In a battle of undefeated Class 6A softball teams, Grants Pass found the edge against South Medford on Tuesday. Danielle Taylor scored the go-ahead run on a bases-loaded walk in a costly fifth inning for the Panthers as the Cavers prevailed, 3-1, during Southwest Conference action. It was an uncharacteristic day for South Medford sophomore ace Pat Moore, who tossed a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts but allowed 11 walks, including six in the fifth inning. Amy Robinson threw a two-hitter with eight strikeouts and three walks for Grants Pass (7-0, 4-0 SWC). Taylor Thomas finished with three walks and a stolen base. The Panthers (8-1, 3-1) took the first lead of the game in the top of the third inning when Rachael Moore’s squeeze bunt scored Krystal Williams, who had doubled and advanced to third on a Pat Moore sacrifice bunt. But the Cavers would capitalize on a string of walks in the fifth. Halleigh Noga was walked with the bases loaded, bringing home Thomas and evening the score at 1. Then Stephanie Norrick was walked, plating Taylor. A batter later, Noga crossed home plate after another base on balls was drawn. “I thought our kids did a good job late in the game of being selective,” Grants Pass head coach Donnie Bellum said. “I thought they got some really good at-bats. … Coming in, obviously with Pat, (South Medford) is going to be tough. She throws the ball well and keeps them in games. For us to sneak one away tonight, it’s a big one.” South placed runners on first and third in the fifth but couldn’t come away with any runs. “We know we have a long season ahead of us and this definitely isn’t a defining moment for us,” South Medford head coach Miranda Gillaspie-Smith said.
