Don Hickman, deputy fire marshal with Fire District No. 3, said firefighters got the call at about 10:40 p.m. Three fire engines and 16 firefighters rushed to the 200 block of First Street where the roof was ablaze on a two-story home near the river. Two people slept inside the home, unaware of the fire overhead until neighbors woke them up, Hickman said. Although the house had smoke detectors, the fire on the roof didn’t trigger them. Neighbors called 911. The residents, whose names weren’t listed in a department report, escaped safely. Hickman said the fire was contained quickly, but the house suffered lots of smoke and water damage. It will be uninhabitable until repairs are made, he said.
