North Valley girls down Pirates, 45-34 MERLIN North Valleys defensive intensity took its toll in the second quarter and propelled the Knights to a 45-34 Skyline Conference girls basketball victory over Phoenix Friday. North Valley avenged a three-point loss early in the season. In that game, the Knights were missing five players, making way for youngsters to get seasoning. One was Elaina Reinius, who continues to evolve. The 6-foot-2 freshman tallied eight points and 10 rebounds Friday. "I guess you could say she got her baptism," North Valley coach Byron Robertson said, referring to the first meeting. "Shes done a good job of coming along. This was a huge win to get that first one back, and now were at full strength." North Valley (8-9, 5-3 Skyline) moved into a second-place tie in league. Phoenix(8-7, 5-3, Skyline) stayed close early and trailed only 8-7 after Chelsea Clark hit a 3-pointer to end the first-quarter scoring. However, the Knights outran the Pirates 19-5 in the second. "After that, we put the clamps on them on defense," said Robertson, "and they didnt shoot the ball very well. We got out in the open floor, got some easy buckets and put it away almost in the second quarter." Phoenix was 12-for-53 from the field. Galina Vial and Whitney Coston each had eight points for North Valley and Shannon Silva 10 rebounds. Jessica Prisbrey led Phoenix with nine points.
