Lewis Mark Applebaker Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Mar. 21, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted Mar. 21, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News Lewis Mark Applebaker was born December 30, 1914 in Jacksonville, Ore. to Joseph and Mable Applebaker. He passed away March 6, 2015 in the house he built beside the house he was born in. He lived for 100 years, two months, and six days. He was the first of his family to graduate from high school and was one of seven graduates in the Jacksonville High School class of 1932. Lewis joined the Civilian Conservation Corps shortly after high school and was sent to Camp Bradford in the Roseburg area. After coming home from the CCC he got a job on the Jackson County bridge crew with Wes and Lyle Hartman from Jacksonville. He then took a welding job in the Seattle shipyard and moved to Kirkland, Wash. in the early 1940s. Ilene Norris joined him in Washington and also worked as a pipefitter helper in the shipyard. They were married in Kirkland in 1942, and lived a long life together. He moved back to Jacksonville and with his brother re-opened their father's old blacksmith shop as the Applebaker's Automotive Shop for several years. After the automotive shop venture, Lewis took a job as a mechanic for the U.S. Forest Service in Grants Pass followed by a job for Crater Lake Machinery in Medford. Lewis worked there until his retirement in 1976. After he retired from Caterpillar he worked for a while at Witham's Truck Shop in Medford, attended Diesel Engine classes at Rogue Community College in Grants Pass, and ended up teaching there. Lewis was a Jacksonville volunteer fireman for 34 years and served as Chief for 15 years. As recognition of that service a small fire department museum established in Jacksonville was named the Applebaker Fire Hall. He loved the outdoors, was an expert fly fisherman, and grew up hunting deer. He lived a long and interesting life and leaves many friends and aquaintances in Jacksonville. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ilene Applebaker; his parents, Joseph and Mable Applebaker; and his brother, Theron J. Applebaker. He is survived by his son, Dan Applebaker and his wife Betty and his daughter, Susan Van Domelen and her husband Ed. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at the Memory Gardens Chapel, 1395 Arnold Lane, Medford, OR. He will be laid to rest with Ilene in Memory Gardens Memorial Park.
