Laird signed an interim stipulated order Monday with the board in which she agreed to withdraw from the practice of medicine and have her medical license placed in inactive status pending the outcome of the investigation, according to a copy of the order. Laird's husband, Dan Arnold, said the medical board investigation is not related to Laird being lost in the woods. Laird, who is recuperating at home, is an emergency room doctor at Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center in Medford. She remains an employee of the hospital, Asante Senior Public Relations Specialist Lauren Van Sickle said today. According to the stipulated order with the medical board regarding Laird's medical license, "The Board received credible information regarding Licensee that resulted in the Board initiating an investigation. The results of the Board's investigation to date have raised concerns to the extent that the Board believes it necessary that Licensee agree to cease the practice of medicine until the investigation is completed." Information about the complainant, the date the complaint was filed and the reason for the investigation is confidential, said Oregon Medical Board Executive Director Kathleen Haley. The order notes that Laird's signing of the agreement is not an admission of any wrongdoing. The board issued the order for the purpose of protecting the public and in order to make a complete investigation with respect to Laird's performance or conduct and her ability to safely and competently practice medicine, the order states. The Oregon Medical Board can investigate doctors for a variety of allegations, including inappropriate or substandard care, doctoring while impaired, inappropriate prescribing, an inappropriate relationship with a patient or patient family member and criminal activity, according to the board. The board typically doesn't investigate complaints about issues such as billing, insurance or rudeness by a doctor. The board receives hundreds of complaints a year and each complaint goes through an initial review process. Complaints that do not indicate violations are closed with no further action, while complaints that are not closed are assigned to board investigators, who gather additional information. "We try to move as expeditiously as possible," Haley said. The board's primary focus is to ensure patient safety, she said. Investigations can take a few months to more than a year, depending on complexity, according to the board. Most investigations close with no formal action taken by the board. Other outcomes could include having the physician enter an agreement for corrective action, or the physician could receive a reprimand, pay a fine, practice under a probationary period or with a chaperone or have his or her license suspended, according to the board. Arnold said Laird is recovering fairly well from her ordeal in the woods. "She's sore and tired," he said. "Her recovery will be slow and steady, but all signs point to a full recovery." She did not return after a morning run on Aug. 26, prompting a search and rescue effort with hundreds of volunteers. Laird was found by searchers on a trail Sunday evening lost, dehydrated, disoriented, scraped up and with a bump on her head. She was transported to RRMC for treatment. Arnold said Laird is thankful to be alive and back home. "The overwhelming feeling we have is gratitude for all of the people who searched for her and found her," Arnold said.
