Judy Hanshue Lozano Sunday Sep 4, 2016 at 2:00 AM June 14, 1941 - May 7, 2016 Judy was born on June 14, 1941, in Palo Alto, California, to Jerry and Juel Hanshue. Judy attended Washington Elementary School in Santa Clara, Willow Glen Elementary School in San Jose, University Avenue School in Los Gatos, and was a member of the Los Gatos High School class of 1958. Judy attended University of the Pacific (UOP) in Stockton, where she was an active member of the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority and participant in student government affairs. She was awarded a Bachelor's Degree in Art in 1962. Upon graduation from UOP, she entered and won a prestigious guest-editing contest sponsored by Mademoiselle magazine, which allowed her the opportunity to live in New York City and Rome in the summer of 1962 and serve as the guest editor-in-chief of the magazine. Upon returning from her summer in New York City and Europe, she enrolled in a master of fine arts program focusing on serigraphy at San Jose State University. After graduating from San Jose State, she taught art at Blackford High School in Campbell from 1964 to 1968 before joining the art department at Leigh High School in Los Gatos where she taught until 1975. Judy married fellow artist and high school art teacher Bob Lozano of Palo Alto on December 19, 1964. From 1964 to 1971, they lived in Los Gatos. In 1968, they spent a year traveling through Europe on a teaching sabbatical. Bob and Judy hosted several shows featuring their artwork around the Bay Area in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1971, they built a home in the Santa Cruz Mountains outside of Los Gatos. Their daughters, Sarah and Mandy, were born in 1975 and 1977, respectively. Bob and Judy were avid skiers and hikers and enjoyed spending time with their family and friends in the Sierra Nevada and at their Lake Tahoe cabin. Soon after the girls were born, Judy started Hanshue-Lozano Graphics in the late 1970s and continued running her silk-screening business until her retirement in the mid-2000s. Judy enjoyed much success in her business as she sold and manufactured a line of towels and potholders and other fabric textiles that were sold at both small and large retail establishments throughout the United States. In 1983, the Lozanos purchased a ranch outside of Butte Falls, Oregon and in 1985, moved their family to begin the last chapter of their lives, owning and operating the JRL Ranch. The Lozanos ran a cow-calf operation that focused on pasture-raised, grass-fed beef cattle in a holistically managed environment. The JRL Ranch received several awards, of which Bob and Judy were extremely proud. The Lozanos participated in a rangeland resources internship program through Oregon State University and hosted a college student for a month each summer on their ranch. The ranch allowed Judy an unlimited canvas to explore her love for all things botanical – her garden and yard were ever-expanding, impressive, and enjoyed by many who were lucky enough to visit the ranch. Judy used her artistic talents to support local announcements, fund-raisers, and to painstakingly create botanical illustrations for southern Oregon gardening guides. Judy was a lifelong learner and frequently enjoyed taking classes from the local extension service, soil and water conservation district, Southern Oregon University, and other regional educational institutions. Judy was a supporter of historic preservation and served for several years as a board member of the Southern Oregon Historical Society and was an active member of the Historical Society’s “Gold Digger’s” organization. Judy loved books and what they represented to society and used literature as a means to connect with many people. She was a tireless leader of the Butte Falls Friends of the Library Chapter and became a major force to ensure that libraries remained open and supported throughout southern Oregon. She worked closely with the Jackson County Library Foundation to create “Baby’s First Book” – a program that ensures that all babies born in Jackson County are given a board book and parental information about free services and programs provided by local libraries to foster a lifetime of literacy. She was an active member of two longstanding book clubs that she thoroughly enjoyed for many years. Bob, Judy, Sarah, Mandy, and their families enjoyed traveling/trekking throughout the United States, Europe, North Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and South America. Judy recently traveled to Cuba with an inspiring group to explore Cuban art and music culture and was looking forward to a 75th birthday celebration with her family in Iceland. Judy passed away peacefully on her ranch in Butte Falls on May 7, 2016. She has now joined her late husband, Bob, who passed away in November 2014; her mother, Juel; father, Jerry; stepfather, Bob Hamsher; brother, Phillip; and many dear friends. Judy is survived by her daughter, Sarah Lozano Larson and Sarah’s husband, Ryan Larson, as well as grandson, Blake and granddaughter, Scarlett Larson, of Encinitas, California; daughter, Mandy Lozano of Seattle, Washington; sister, Susie Kankel, of Los Gatos; and many nieces and nephews and their families. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the Lozano family requests memorial contributions be made to one of the following organizations: Southern Oregon Historical Society “Gold Diggers;” Rogue Gallery and Art Center; Jackson County Library Foundation; Jackson County 4-H (via the Oregon State University Extension Service), University of the Pacific; Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority; and NUMU, the New Museum of Los Gatos.
